Rain Barrel Guide

We recycle everything . . . even water. Which has been especially helpful during the water restrictions in the summer months. Our city has a program where it provides rain barrels for $60. We ran down and picked one up. There were added costs, we needed a bit of piping, and some cement blocks for it to sit on but all in, it was less then $80 (+$10 for a very small used water pump, a totally optional add on, you don't need one)!
As I mentioned before where we live we have water restrictions in effect June through September, so having gallons of water for luxuries such as washing your car and watering your grass is very exciting for us.

Some Rain Barrel Facts:

• A 55 Gallon Barrel will collect approx 1300 gallons of water each summer in our area. 
• Rain water is naturally soft and is great for car washing and watering delicate houseplants, as well as your entire garden. 
• Reduces the volume of water flowing into the sewers. 
• Chlorine free water helps maintain a healthy biotic community in the soil. 

Some Rain Barrel tips:

•  Make sure you have a Mesh Screen on top of your rain barrel it keeps not only debris and bugs out but most importantly it keeps the worst bugs of all out . . . Mosquitoes!

• If you are not going to use a pump and instead rely on gravity make sure to prop it up on blocks. 
• If you wanted to make it really low maintenance you could simply attach a soaker hose to the barrel, run it through your garden beds and never worry about watering your garden again! A soaker hose will provide a slow trickle of water consistently. Don't use this method on your trees as it will make the roots grow shallow and close to the surface where the water is. We have trees that need watering in our front yard so we opted for the water pump! 
• If you are as concerned about mosquitoes as I am, drop a tablespoon of olive oil into the barrel every month and they absolutely won't lay eggs in there Although the mesh should do the job of keeping them out, but you can't be too careful when dealing with tiny vampires!
• If you live in a VERY cold climate you might consider disconnecting your barrel and storing it. If you live in a moderately cold climate you can get away with emptying it and storing it upside down outside. Our climate is fairly mild so we'll be storing it outside, although if we get a cold snap we'll definitely empty it and store it upside down.
• Lastly, a bit of a cosmetic tip, if you don't like the color of your barrel you could definitely spray paint it with any paint made for plastic! We're lucky ours came in the exact shade of our trim.

Like everything around our house it's a work in progress, we still have plans for the rain barrel situation on the side, you'll see we have the white PVC piping there (3.), which will connect to a water pump that will make it possible for us to have water pressure and use things like sprinklers and other hose attachments.

 1. Mesh Screen. 2. Hose we're using right now until the water pump system gets hooked up, if your using a gravity feed this hose is all you'll need. 3. The PVC pipe with a hose attachment, it will run under the deck where the water pump is, and will pop out in the front of the house so we're able to water the entire front yard using rain water. Gladly all of the piping will be hidden under the front porch.

We also have plans to add 3 small bushes in front of the barrel so that you don't have to stare at all it's hoses and pipes. But that's going to happen either this fall or next spring we'll see! What ever we plant there will need to be able to withstand some terrible soil conditions and not much light.

Dog Days of Summer

The Calm before the storm

I've been soaking up the sun and relaxing before the storm. It's not really so much of a storm as it is a big 'ol Engagement Party for my Little Sister!

So before I get into the appi's and salads and all of that good stuff, I'm relaxing with a new magazine.

This is what I found in my mailbox . . . Easy Decorating!!

 One room in particular I fell in love with. It totally re-ignited my love of Neutral Rooms!

This room was a lesson in Texture, neutral fabrics, neutral walls and lots of texture! I LOVED IT!
The subway signs, the tree stump side table, the BIG leather ottoman . . . LOVED IT!

Feng Shui Manor

I've always kept feng shui principals in mind when decorating or renovating our homes. I'm not a slave to it . . . but I definitely keep it in mind!
For anyone who doesn't know what Feng Shui is, in short: 
Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the Health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.

I've always had an interest in Feng Shui, I think it appeals to the control freak lurking inside me. The idea that I can shape and control what happens to us, by organizing and decorating our home . . . I AM IN!!!
Through all of my research I've always come to the same conclusion, whether it works or not . . . feng shui  has some great design principals and good tips for keeping order!
Each compass direction has it's own corresponding area of your life for example, South is Fame, West is Children, North West Mentors and helpful people. The theory is that if you're having trouble in a certain area of your life make a change in that part of your house!
Here's our Main Floor Feng Shui Map:

 1. Our North West corner is our Living Room, it's our Mentors and Helpful People sector. The Best color choices for this corner are Grey and Yellow, since we can't do grey we do a bit of yellow. West is the best wall to hang family portraits . . . hence our grouping of family portraits above the fireplace (on our west wall). West is also the best wall to have a metal element, electronics like a TV are considered a metal element and so it's also good that our TV goes on that wall!

2. North is the Career Sector of the house. This area is where you hold your career luck. Because ours in at our backdoor it's hard to decorate it but we are planning on painting the door a yellow or blue color (both would activate some career luck), a picture of a waterfall beside the door would also help!

3. Education sector, ideally this would be where our library should go, but because it's our dining room there's not much to do in there except keep it tidy and clutter free!

 4. Children sector is on our steps, this is definitely a place where we could use some help. I hung two Bird pictures because in feng shui birds are auspicious, although I should definitely add a picture of children or at least add another bird to symbolize three instead of two!

5.Family and Health sector, blue or green are the best color for that sector. It happens to fall in our kitchen so I'm planning on adding more green accents. Green plants are great in the sector so we have our large pothos ivy plant.

 6.The Marriage and Romance sector of our house is in our Library/ Office, not exactly the most romantic area to have it. So I'm slowly adding more red or pink accents because that should activate some more romance ;).

 7."FAME!!! I'm gonna live forever!" The South is the Fame sector, which happens to be at our front door, this area would love some red, but in the absence of red some bright lights would do the trick and our front hall is very bright! And I'm basically super famous so it must be working ;).

 8. Lastly we get to our houses trouble spot. Our wealth sector is missing from our main floor. We are lucky though, because we have a front porch that fills it out. So I've made sure that our front porch is always tidy and we put some nice patio furniture out there, with some nice new cushions! And since we've furnished the deck, we've seen a little more money luck coming our way!

But, the number one Feng Shui tip has to be . . . NO CLUTTER! Clear out all clutter, clutter stops energy and air from circulating both are VERY bad Feng Shui!

One thing I hate about Blogs

If I had to choose one thing I hate about blogs it would have to be all the amazing things that everyone else finds on craigslist for super cheap.
It seems I can't go a day without some one sharing the most amazing dresser or dining set they found on craigslist for $1.50 (I might be exaggerating . . . slightly). While at the exact same time I will be scouring craigslist for something, and while they're driving home their amazing new eames chair for $40, I'm stuck haggling with the guy selling a used billy bookcase for $95 because "Dude, it like totally still works"

Side Story: When we were looking for living room chairs off craigslist we went to see one and  bottom of it was broken threw and looked like someones pet T-Rex had used it as a chew toy. Lee said I don't know it looks pretty beat up under there, the guys response was "Duuuude, it like totally still works" Seriously I laughed so hard . . . once we got back to the car . . . without the chair!

But today . . . today I am victorious! I get to be the thing about blogs that I hate!!!! That last part sounded better in my head :S
We picked this up last night! I just have a quick picture of it sitting in the sellers garage but this is it . . . he came home with us! The coolest bench ever!

And this is the part that will usually send me into a downward spiral of self pity about why I can't find anything for that price on craigslist . . . . I only paid . . . . $20 for him!!!

He's a little rough but we're going to clean him up this weekend . . . maybe give him a fresh coat of paint!!! And should have some fabulous new photos to share of him in his new home, maybe with some new paint.
*Check out that dresser in the back too . . . . it was on sale for $40, but we have no where to put it . . . although I wracked my brain long and hard trying to think of a spot for it! ;)

Sunny Yellow Accents

I Love thrift stores! Somehow if you find something your looking for, it's like you won a teeny tiny lottery! 

Last week I shared the coat tree we found at the Salvation Army, for $4 . . . holla!! :)

 On the same trip we found 3 wood candlesticks. The theme of the trip seemed to be . . . find it, like it, buy it, spray it, LOVE it! We sprayed our coat tree in Oil Rubbed Bronze and we sprayed our Candlesticks in Rust-oleum's Sun Yellow! 

 After a few days in the garage to off gas (I don't want that going on inside the house). I brought them in and popped them on top of the coffee table, fully intending to pick them up later and put them somewhere else, but I liked the way they looked on the coffee table. 

 I think they turned out great! I love their new yellow color, I love their shape and once we add back the wicker tray and other accessories I think I'm going to LOVE their new home on the coffee table! 

 p.s. Each Candlestick was 69 cents!!! That's a total of $2.07 for all three! So far I've spent $6.07 at the thrift store and I still have one more purchase to show you next week!!

Housewife Uniform

 One of the questions I consistently get asked is what kind of clothes do I wear during the week?  I found this kind of weird at first, of coarse I don't walk around naked. I was telling one of my girlfriends about it and she said she wondered that too. She explained, that if it was her blogging from home she'd be in her PJs all day, she wondered if I was in my PJs all day.
I definitely DON'T stay in my PJs all day, I find that I feel the best and get the most done when I wake up, get dressed in something attractive, do my hair and put make-up on. The days I look frumpy . . . I feel frumpy. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like this!
Most days it's jeans, an attractive top, a simple necklace and stud earrings. I like to carry a tote around to run errands because I can keep extra shopping bags, and my coupons . . . everything a suburban housewife needs to run her life (apparently I only need shopping bags and coupons . . . and chapstick ;).

 If I'm going to see friends or you know . . . . "lunching with the ladies". I'd probably still be in jeans and a pretty top.

 If I'm going to visit Lee at work and maybe go for lunch I might put something a little bit cuter on. Something like a little summer dress and a jean jacket.

 And lastly. If I'm going to be shopping with my sister or heading into the city for an event I would probably wear something like this . . . like most women I can't get enough of Maxi dresses!

What a difference a year makes!

While we were outside testing stain samples for our front porch (more on that next week), I thought I would grab a couple of photos of the house. Although we're still a few weeks away from blooming hydrangeas I thought I would share what a difference a year makes.
I can't believe how much our plants have grown.

We still have lots of plans for the exterior:

 1. We'd like to add an archway above the side gate, and maybe grow some wisteria on it. I'm hoping to make it a bigger pergola style archway.

2. I would love it if Lee could weld up a window box for me, I would put it under the third bedroom window, and grow some beautiful trailing flowers in it.

3. This will be one of our larger exterior projects, we plan on adding some cedar shingles to the second peak, like the cedar shingles in the first peak.
Also, we'll be welding up a new pendant light to replace the way under scaled one that is there now!

4. And Lastly, we'll plant some hostas on the shady side of our house between us and the neighbors.

It's a bit hard to see what's going on in the front, so I thought I'd share my front yard inspiration with you . . . I found this image on Pinterest a couple years ago and Loved the idea of a hedge of wild hydrangeas being contained by a hedge of super structured boxwood. So that's what is planted out front, white hydrangeas and boxwood!

Hopefully this is what our front yard will look like in 3 or 4 more years.

It's easy to overlook your growing perennials, which is why I'm so glad that I have this picture from last year to compare against. Patience is not a virtue of mine, so seeing evidence that things are in fact growing is really helpful for Me!!

Statement Piece

Lately I've been thinking that our dining room might be in need of a Statement Piece. I'm not about to switch out our dining room pendant just yet, but I am on the hunt for something large and in charge!
Here's what I've sourced so far . . . I might be seeing some DIY lighting in our future:

Option 1: From Pottery Barn. I love that it's totally weird and kind of quirky. And the small space dweller that still lives in me thinks that storing your wine glasses as a chandelier is a great use of space ;). I thought with Lee's welding skills DIYing something like this with dollar store wine glasses would be kind of cool.

Option 2: Is from Candelabra and at $1200 a completely unrealistic choice for our Manor. But I could also see some form of DIY maybe using an existing Chandelier from Craigstlist and some Beads.

Option 3: Is from Lucy Renshaw, I have no idea how much it is, but I saw it on Apartment Therapy a while back and the image has always stuck in my head. It's made from wood but it looks like ribbon, I'm seriously in LOVE. I'm not sure if it would fit into our existing decor but who cares, for something this cool I'll redecorate the entire house (Lee if you're reading this Calm Down I'm not going to redecorate the whole house!). ;)

Come in . . . hang your coat up!

Come on in . . . hang up your coat . . . on our new COAT TREE!
I'm not sure if I've ever squeaked out so much joy from $4? On a recent trip to our local secondhand store (Salvation Army) I found a very wobble-y, very gold coat tree. We've been looking for a coat tree since we moved in a year and a half ago but it wasn't a necessity so it always got pushed down the list. Luckily it did or we would have spent way more then $4.

Is there anything that a can of oil rubbed bronze spray paint can't fix??  (side note: the coat hook behind the tree will get moved)
Now for $4 he wasn't without his issues. Besides the gold finish, it was missing one pipe topper and one screw. Lee was able to fix the screw by putting in one of our own, but the small ball is missing for good, we just turned that side towards the wall! ;) Fixed!

I think my favorite parts now, were my least favorite parts before we sprayed it. The Plastic Topper and Plastic fastener piece (it holds the two sections of pole together). They are made of super cheap plastic and when they were still gold it was really obvious, but in oil rubbed bronze they look fantastic!!!

I'm so glad that it all worked out, like I said we've been hoping to get a coat tree for that spot for a while now. We both had some serious concerns about whether or not the tree would be sturdy enough to hold up my purse and/or Lee's jackets but it doesn't seem to be an issue at all!

Best $4 spent . . . EVA!

EASY Cheese Tortellini Salad

Summer came around a little late this year, it rained all June! I seriously didn't put on a pair of shorts until last week. But with summer in full swing (I hate to be a whiner but could someone turn it down a couple degrees, haha) we're in Summer Food Mode!

To me summer always means BBQ and Salad. I love a fresh salad on a hot day, but for Lee a salad is just not enough to fill up. If I can get away with it I will try to dirty the least amount of dishes possible, so making one big salad for both of us would be ideal. I figured what's more filling then Cheese Tortellini?? and it's vegetarian so two birds, one stone (or one dish I should say . . . and no birds because it's vegetarian).
Here's my recipe for Cheese Tortellini Salad: Feel free to add or subtract what ever you want, this salad is great made with whatever is in your fridge or garden!

Salad:
1 Package Fresh Cheese Tortellini (we use Olivieri Tri Color Cheese Tortellini, but feel free to use your own fresh handmade tortellini if you are that talented. You'll need about 700gr). I like using Olivieri pasta, honestly I would prefer to make it homemade but making your own tortellini is a lot of work, and if you give Olivieri's ingredient list a look you'll see there are NO fake weird ingredients. I think they are a good alternative to homemade.
1 Head Broccoli 
1/4 Head Cauliflower
1 Red Bell Pepper (or yellow, or Orange)
1 Jar Artichoke Hearts (most of the time I don't have artichoke hearts in the pantry so we usually omit them)
5 or 6 Grape Tomatoes 
A small amount of red onion (make sure not to put too much in or the whole salad will taste like red onion)
3 or 4 Radishes sliced thin
If you like olives add some of those in, I think some cooked peas or fresh corn would be really good in there too.

Dressing: 
1/4 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (we like our dressings really vinegar-y if you don't add more oil)
1/4 cup of Red Wine Vinegar
1/4 cup Sour Cream
1 Clove of Garlic
1 Tbsp Sugar
1 tsp Kosher Salt
1 tsp Black pepper
1 tsp Dried Parsley (not totally necessary)
* Sometimes I use Fresh Lemon juice instead of Red Wine Vinegar and I add a couple of dashes of Worcestershire Sauce. Also keep in mind that it's no longer vegetarian if you add Worcestershire. 

Instructions: 
Boil up pasta according to package instructions, if you are making your own pasta boil according to your grandmother's instructions :). Once the pasta is cooked, strain and let cool.
Chop up all of your salad ingredients and put in to large bowl.
Add pasta when cool.
Make dressing in separate bowl, and pour over salad.
Add a big sprinkling of Parmesan cheese!

 I hope you'll try this super easy summer salad! It keeps really well in the fridge too!!!

Here a chair, there a chair . . . everywhere a blue chair!

Mini Manor had a yard ei ei o, and in that yard she had some chairs ei ei o. With a blue chair here and a blue chair there, here a chair, there a chair . . . everywhere a blue chair!

If my version of old McDonald didn't give you a hint . . . we bought some blue chairs. Why did we buy blue chair when we had just painted our new bench blue???  Because as it turned out Lee did not fit in the blue bench. I'm not joking. When we bought the bench Lee was more concerned if I liked it so he told me to sit in it, then got distracted by the sellers cute chihuahua (Lee can't resist the charms of a tiny dog). I sat in it and said Yeah it's comfy, Lee paid the lady and we left. When we got it home we immediately started sanding and painting it. It wasn't until the paint had dried and we were deciding on cushions did Lee finally sit in it, it made a funny squeak, followed by a large CRACK! Lee jumped out faster than a startled duck (yup that's the best comparison I can make), and while he didn't break anything in half, he did crack the piece of wood under the seat. We would have re-enforced the bench, but it really was too small for him, his knees were up to his ears when he sat in it. Oh well, live and learn . . . always have Lee sit in something before you buy it. No big deal, my mom phoned the very same day the bench post went up and said . . . if we ever get rid of it she wants. My parents are both the same height as me so it will work for them!
On to bigger and better things . . . literally BIGGER!

I thought I remembered The Real Canadian Superstore having patio furniture so this weekend we ran in there just to see what they had on sale. Turns out EVERYTHING was on sale. The first thing I saw staring at me when I walked in was a Navy Blue Muskoka chair! It was Fate! I LOVE Muskoka chairs, and we spent a few weekends at the start of the summer looking for Big Muskoka chairs but found nothing in our price range. Not only were these in our price range, they were already the color we wanted!!! I almost feel bad telling you how much they cost but here goes . . . $62 each! Seriously a BIG, Sturdy, already painted the most fabulous shade of Blue Muskoka Chair for $62!!!

 At that price I couldn't resist getting one extra for against the house. The two against the railing are great for hanging out, but if you really wanted to get your lounge on :) we'd need something with a footstool. So in the same shade of Blue we picked up this Muskoka Lounger, the little footstool ottoman pulls out from under the chair and tucks back in when we're not using it!

 The lounger was only $69!

And just for a finishing touch we added the matching side table, and an umbrella  . . . ella . . . ella . . . . a . . .a . . a.  I told Lee he could stand under my Umbrella, anytime! ;)

But for real, the color of the umbrella was a bit of an issue for me. I couldn't decide between Red, Blue, a stripe, white or taupe. Obviously we went with Taupe, but it wasn't an easy decision. We ruled out blue because there's no way it would be the same color of blue as the chairs and I didn't want different shades of navy blue to fight with each other. We ruled out White because, having a white umbrella just seems like an invitation for dirt! And eventually ruled out red because we look directly at the umbrella from our living room and RED was just too jarring. So it came down to striped or taupe, frankly taupe won just based on price, the taupe one was $20 and the striped one was $50. I liked them both so why pay $30 more if I don't have to.

I hope you enjoyed our new backyard furniture, sometimes things work out in the end . . . especially if you're my mom and get a new blue bench for free! haha

If you're looking to buy the chairs or the umbrella they are from The Real Canadian Superstore (aka. Loblaws). I always try to keep in mind that our blog is read by people all over the world, and I try to pick things out that are accessible to everyone, but unfortunately these chairs are only available in Canada, through Superstore. For our American readers, I found this muskoka chair on Amazon for $58, you could definitely spray it navy blue and have the same look for around the same price. I hope that helps.
