    Reader Request: Paperwork Organization

Another question I receive often is about paperwork, Bills, Junk mail, statements  . . . all of it!
I seriously can't stand paper clutter, one because it's messy looking and two because it's so un necessary. By un-necessary I mean most of it is JUNK!

    Here's how we handle it:
Disclaimer: Some paper cuts may occur ;)
First things first, Junk mail goes straight into the recycle bin! It's a really simple thing to do, but it really makes a ton of difference.

Second, you need an inbox. Just something on your desk or in your kitchen or where ever. Something you can put the mail into everyday.
Every week we go through the inbox. Wednesday is our day to pay bills and file away what needs to be filed away.

Third, set up two filing spots.
You'll need one spot that's really easy to access. This would be for your monthly bills and statements. We use a transparent file holder hung off the wall. (from Staples for $5.99)
    We keep a folder for:
-Credit Card Statements, for 1 year.
-Regular Bills Cable etc. . . 6 months. Our cell phone bills are emailed to us.
-Bank Statements (we've gone paperless with those too).
-Our Portfolio statements (like our retirement savings and mutual funds).
-A folder labeled House for Utility bills and incoming property taxes and assessments.
The other filing spot can be a box in the back of your closet or where ever. It will hold less frequently accessed files. Things like:
    -Product Warranties
    -Appliance manuals
-Mortgage information for every house we've bought in the last 7 years.
    -Property Tax and Assessment information.
-Tax returns up to 7 years back.
-This is also the place to keep any important information like birth records or immigration papers, stuff like that.
As for Receipts we have two boxes on the shelf, one is for my bloggy tax receipts and one is for Lee's business receipts.
And that's how we tamed the paperwork beast. Woooo cha (That's the sound of my whip cracking).

Now that the paper work is organized . . . it's time to get on to some cable management. We are swimming in wires over here!

I love the wicker box/baskets for other files... I may steal that idea! (I should write *also steal that idea* since you have about a trillion that I've nabbed!) Thanks so much! ~Michelle (Boston)

Oh - how did you combat the monitor cords on Lee's desk?? ~Michelle (Boston)

Because Lee only uses the monitor with his laptop (he needs two screens to work on big documents), we don't need cords out all the time. He's able to just plug the cord from his laptop into the monitor, and the monitor runs off the laptop!
        Hope that helps!

You do a great job with this! I use a lot of the same methods... though I'm lucky enough to have a room dedicated to my paper wrangling. Check it out:

Hi Ashli! This is all amazing and inspirational!! I noticed your WheatBelly book and searched your blog to see if you reviewed it and was excited to see you had! I just bought it and have the same feelings. I wanted to recommend Jonathan Safran Foer's "Eating Animals". I'm a vegetarian and I was engrossed in this book. I really think you will be to. I thought it was so easy to read and interesting. Now that you are so organized you probably have time to read a new book! :)

Love all your ideas. We use a lot of similar methods. However, I really want to go through our paper stash (long term files) and weed out. On my list to do this fall when I am no longer a "sahm" LOL

        You're so welcome Christy!
The wicker file baskets are just plain old wicker baskets I found at Homesense. I just add hanging file folders in them and use them like a file cabinet!!!
We didn't have room for a traditional file cabinet!!
        Hope that helps

I also want to know how you hide the computer cables. The cables in my entertainment center are driving me nuts, but I haven't come across the perfect solution yet.

      Hi,

Can you tell me how you managed to hang the transaparent file folder from Staples that you use for "everday paperwork". I think this is a fabulous idea for easily acessing all the paperwork you need on an everday basis. Would you be able to provide a link to purchase this product?

Thank you for your wonderful home organisation tips!

It has two little holes in the back so that it could hand off of two screws, but if you're didn't have two holes you could use Command Adhesive Strips . . . they're made by 3M and they're AWESOME!
        Hope that helps

Alternative to your junk mail solution. I have a container that holds about 1 inch of junk mail. Before it gets full, I will sit down with it while watching TV. I open it, and take everything out. I X out my address making sure it is still readable and write "Please remove my name from your mailing list". I put everything including the envelope it came in and put it all back in the postage paid envelope provided by the sender. I seal it up and mail it back. In a fairly short period of time, I have reduced my junk mail to about 1 piece every 2 weeks.
