So I'm just going to come right out and say it . . . "I'm pretty sure half of the neighborhood has seen my butt" ~ Lee February 2012 ;) hehe
Here's the spec's:
~At the top of our stairs there is a BIG window.
~It's west facing and we're lucky not to have a house on that side.
~We can use all of the natural light we can get.
~The view was Less than desirable
So we needed something that wouldn't block the light, but would give us privacy (so that the other half of the neighborhood doesn't see Lee's butt!).
Vinyl Window Film was the perfect solution.
You can buy it on Amazon, or Walmart has it sometimes, we bought ours from Canadian Tire. It's part of their Debbie Travis Line.
It cost around $20 and we were able to cover the whole window.
It was really easy to install, first, wash you window. Next spray window with water. Cut Vinyl to size and place on top of wet window. Squegee out the bubbles! DONE! Seriously so easy!
Here's how it looks at Night, we chose a Bamboo Pattern:
Sorry I had to take the photo at night otherwise you wouldn't be able to see the pattern, here's how the window looks during the day:
We're really happy with it. It blocks NONE of the light and gives us complete privacy, definitely a great alternative to blinds!

I like the new window treatment. Can you see out of the window? I have a couple windows that I would consider doing with the vinyl film. I love Debbie Travis. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou can't really see out of it! i thought the clear spots were just like clear glass, but they are more like frosted glass!
DeleteHope that helps

Great addition, but be sure you can't see through it by having one of you go outside at night and have one stand inside with the lights on just to be sure. Funny story...my older (now in her 70s) next door neighbor was concerned that you could see in through her bathroom window...one of those gigantic frosted pretty paned SUPER expensive windows. It sits over her garden tub, but also is in direct line with most of her bathroom. So, one evening years ago while we were having our monthly women's club meeting at the home behind hers her daughter (who also lives in our neighborhood) called her mom, knowing she was concerned about it, and told her to go into the bathroom, turn the lights on and stand in her tub. She did. We could see her, and then asked to hold up a random number of fingers, her daughter counted...mom...I think you need to add some blinds to that window!! LOL She did!! Chances are, you won't see a clear view, but will still be able to make out the silhouette.
ReplyDeleteIn my first house we had a window that had a similar treatment (not as pretty) that the previous owners had put up. I took it down to let the light in, only to realize that it was there so you couldn't see straight into the neighbor's bathroom. I ended up finding something to cover the window again.
ReplyDeleteAshli, I got so curios, how does it look like from outside? /Johanna
ReplyDeleteYou can see silhouettes, but no detail. And we don't hang out naked on our steps it's just to block the view from the bathroom to the linen closet.

I have a window just like this on my second story, I want to let light in but have a slight covering for night time. I will be buying this ASAP! Thanks Ashli.
ReplyDeleteCan you not see in from outside at night? Worth checking.

DeleteThat's a good point to mention though, check it from the outside at night!!!
Thanks

i just shot coffee out my nose! that was too funny!!
DeleteSaw your barn door highlighted on Centsational Girl's best of the blogosphere!! Congratulations to you!
ReplyDeleteI love temporary solutions that look permanent!
Looks awesome :) I always find myself thinking...How on earth does this woman find all these great items that she needs?!!!
ReplyDeleteSorry *giggle* but I sort of expected a post on Lee's butt ;-) ;-) ;-)
ReplyDelete(Very immature, I know. Will sit down and be very sorry for that ... *giggle*...)
Katharina,
DeleteDo you think the other half of the neighbourhood is now going to be disappointed? heheheh

I'm awed by the purchases you've made at tire shops. I would get my tires rotated more often if we had tire shops like that here! Ours simply sell tires.
ReplyDeleteLowe's sells all kinds of things like that. We have cheap builder grade windows with no UV protection. We added some of their tinted film on our foyer windows to cut down on the sun coming in. It keeps it from getting so hot upstairs. They have mirrored film too where you can see out, but nobody can see in. I need that for my side lights at the front door. I do like the bamboo film you found. It amazes me all the things you come up with. :)
ReplyDeleteOh that is super cool. We were just about to buy a shade from Ikea but I like this one better, then we don't have to deal with strings etc. Hope you had a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I put some of that vinyl (except from Home Depot) with different pattern as a temporary measure on my side light windows beside the front door. I was only going to do that until I thought of something better. It looks great though and it's been there for a few years now.
ReplyDeleteLooks great and the bamboo pattern looks cool. I had that film put in my huge bathroom windows in my old house when it was being built. I love the natural light coming into these rooms. Great job... Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog... I've book marked you and will be back. Thanks for the inspiration. Aloha, Allyson
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the bamboo. I am just not too sure if I want a big white blank window that I can't see out of. I have a cute oval window in my laundry room that needs something. Maybe I will try this and see how it works. My question to you is, does it pull off if you don't like it? Is it reusable?
ReplyDeleteIt pulls off really easy!! We had to pull ours off and re-position it once, it came off really easy. I don't know about re-usable?? I would say yes . . . but I haven't tried it myself, I don't think you could pull it off and store it, but if you pulled it off one window and put it on another window that would work!
DeleteHope that helps a bit,
Let me know if you try it!

Wow, I never even heard of such a thing! I love how it looks at night, but I feel like I may not like the look of it as much during the day.
ReplyDeleteI actually like ours the most during the day!!!
DeleteIt gives off a very diffused light!!!

i luv this! i'm gonna look at my walmart for some. i've been trying to find something like that for my kitchenette window to no avail. thanks!
ReplyDeleteExcellent! So, you can't see the pattern during the day? I'd really like to know this answer! Thanks for posting about this product...it looks great where you have it! wendy
ReplyDeleteThe mirrored ones can be seen through at night if you have lights on in the house.
