Overnight I have turned into a granny. I love needlepoint and embroidery. I find it insanely relaxing. I started simple with some tea towels.
I think it might be the organizer in me but I love the idea of one tea towel a day, clearly marked with the day on it! Monday through Sunday!
It was really easy, you'll need ink transfer paper (you can find it here or at Michaels), some tea towels (ours are from Zellers), a needle and some thread.
I chose a font one the computer and wrote out the days of the week . . . printed it out on the computer, and using the ink transfer paper, traced out the words on to the towels.
If you wanted you could use a fabric pen from any craft store, and just write the words on to your towels.
Then, pick your thread color and embroider away. There are lots of How To Embroider instructions around the Internet so I'll save you mine (this tutorial was really great).
It was all going so well until we got to Wednesday. Darn Wednesday! I was in a bit of a fog or possibly drunk (haha just kidding, of course), and I spelled Wednesday wrong. Not only did I spell it wrong once, which might be kind of excusable, but I printed it out wrong, read it again, traced it onto a tea towel, read it on the tea towel, then spent 30 minutes embroidering it into said tea towel, then looked at the finished product and thought "That's great, Wednesday's done". It wasn't until a week later when I went to pull Wednesday's towel and thought, "Hmmmmm . . . that doesn't look right". Hahaha
I phoned my mom to tell her how they should have sent me to better schools because I am 29 and can't spell Wednesday. ;) She said that she thought the fact that Wednesday was spelt wrong was charming. I totally agree, I kind of like that Wednesday is spelt Wensday, it's stupidly quirky! haha
It really was easy to do . . . especially if you can spell properly. I really hope you'll consider trying a little embroidery of your own.

Those are adorable! I love added touches like this in a home.
ReplyDeleteYour mom's idea of leaving "Wensday" misspelled was great. Adorable and great idea!

These are great Ashli. Your embroidery looks so lovely and so purposeful it makes me think that that is how Wednesday should be spelled. Or should I say "spelt"? :-) You can also find transfer paper at Stockade in Canada: https://stockade.ca/category.asp?cat=DGB
ReplyDeleteSuper cute, and I like the fact that Wednesday is spelled wrong! I used to do needlepoint quite often. Might have to pick it back up!!
ReplyDeleteI love the Wednesday! I did something similar. I had t-shirts made for everyone when we drove from Ky to Seattle last year (3,265 miles....) and I misspelled a word (I've blocked which one from my memory.) I shared the shirt on my blog, ordered them and it wasn't until I pulled out the shirt to show my son when they arrived that HE pointed out I'd misspelled something.
ReplyDeleteShowed up by a ten year old...
I love the towels :)
Darling... I want to make some.. Granny club?
ReplyDeleteCould have been worse ... you might have spelled it Whensday! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe tea towels are adorable and your Mother was right leaving 'Wensday' as you spelled it.

I think your Mom was right, its cute and quirky spelled wrong all the little touches make a house a home.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! I've got some extra embroidery floss hanging around - maybe this is my next fun crafty project :). Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDelete'Wens' is Dutch for 'wish' so consider it the 'make-a-wish-day' ;)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness I Love "wish" day. That's how I am going to explain it from now on :)
DeleteLots of love
Ashli
I'm Dutch and i would say the same as Linda.:-) I think it's a pretty mistake.
ReplyDeleteI read your blog with a lot of pleasure, it's lovely, just as Max :-).
These are lovely and I think the mistake is charming. We would all be so boring if it weren't for our imperfections! These would make great wedding shower gifts.
ReplyDeleteAshli, just tell people that you spelled it phonetically. Problem solved!
ReplyDeleteLove these towels. Such a vintage touch! I used to cross stitch tea towels. You can buy them with a little band or square in them and then you just need a little pattern for counted cross stitch. I bet you would love doing it. So easy and like colouring only better! I'm a forgetful speller and believe that everything should be spelled exactly how it sounds. In this case, Wensday is correct! ;)
ReplyDeleteso great, I made my mom a silhouette image and spelled the word none as non and it totally threw the whole thing off- I had to start over since it was a gift- even though I had already framed it!
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful! Def going to try
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those times that I say "now, why didn't I think of that?". I have wanted "daily" dish towels forever, but they are hard to find, and pricey when I do find them. Multiply the expensive price times 2, because I put out 2 towels every night, for the next day and I REALLY can't bring myself to buy them. Thanks to your "GENIUS" I can now have my "fancy" towels.
ReplyDeleteDo you find that this type of tea towel are absorbent enough for you?
Your blog makes me Happy, Happy, Happy!
Thanks Stephanie,
DeleteAfter a couple of washes tge towel are just fine. But the first few times they are much better at pushing water around, as opposwd to absorbing it.haha
2 washes and your good thought!!!
Lots of love
Ashli
Love love love love love. I think I can even do this!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo cool! We are celebrating ours today, 5th anniversary :)
ReplyDeleteLOL @ Wensday. But it's a cute mistake. And it passes off for a good anecdote. ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary to you and your husband! :)
You make me want to do that on my tea towels too ;)
