I think that because I spend so much time in our home, thinking about our home, working from home etc . . . the state of our home directly affects the state of me ;). Meaning that if the house is messy or cluttered, I feel messy and cluttered.
Both Lee and I are, self described, "amazing declutter-ers", we are cut throat! If I can't remember the last time we used it . . . it goes into a box and that box goes into the garage. It stays in the garage for a couple months and if we don't need anything from the box, it goes!
I've found that this is the BEST way to declutter because you are way more likely to get rid of things if you know that, if you suddenly need it you can get it back out! But if you don't need it in a reasonable amount of time (ours is 2 months) then you drop the box off at a second hand store, or a friend, or a consignment store . . . just get it OUT!
It just so happened that one of the items I have pictured here, was retrieved out of the garage box today. I'm throwing a girls night party on Saturday Night and our DIY'd tiered flower stand would be perfect!
THE most important tip should be: When your ready to get rid of the box . . . DON'T OPEN IT! Believe me Do Not Open the Box! After a few months in the garage it's common knowledge that the box of stuff will have developed a deadly, airborne virus . . . you must quickly move the box from the garage, to the car and donate it! If you open the box, I am not responsible for what happens to you! ;)
Here's what's sitting in our garage ready to be donated:
1)An old Ikea print (actually the very first thing I ever bought for Lee and myself from Ikea). This is where the Ikea Madness began!
2) Our DIY tiered stand. Which I realized I could use this weekend.
3) A "fake" telescope that use to live in our library.
4) A
homemade poof. It looks cool in this picture, but in real life it's
pretty darn ugly. I knitted the outside myself, almost like a large
scarf and cinched it together at the top and bottom. The result was two
LARGE holes on the top and bottom. And a lot of saggy-ness all around.
5) Two pillows that came with our townhouse couch.
6) A basket in a weird shade of green that refuses to play nice with everything else in the house.
7) A set of pillow cases (not the pillow inserts).
8) A couple of Ikea boxes we had bought for our townhouse.
9) Another pillow case I sewed but have no room for. More and More I'm finding that it's less about the color and more about the TONE of the color (for example . . . not all shades of yellow get along).
10) A Boot for Halloween. We bought it a couple years ago I still LOVE it but I have never been able to fit it into our Halloween decor! It's oddly shaped and for some reason or another doesn't work.
11) Crutches from when I tore a bunch of ligaments in my ankle 2 years ago. We kept them in case I needed surgery on my ankle to repair the damage, but it's almost healed up. I have another scan for it next year, but it looks like I've managed to miss surgery, Yeah! Time to get rid of the crutches!
12) A birdcage candle holder, I LOVE IT. I have never been able to find a place for it in our new house! Our dining table is round now and it looks a little odd. It was perfect when we had a rectangle table but just not working on our round table. (I also tried it on the coffee table but it was too big).
13) A print from Jysk. I LOVE Punch Buggies and thought that I would love a punch buggy print . . . turns out I only like to drive them, not hang them in the living room.
14) A set of pillow cases I made for the guest room. I thought that they would read RED and match the drapes, but they read orange, thanks to the orange flowers. They had to go.
15) These baskets live in our front hall console. I wasn't in love with the green so I've been on the look out for new, wood toned, wicker baskets.
16) The matching pillow to an old duvet cover we don't own anymore.
17) Curtain Panels I bought for the living room when we first moved in. I don't know what I was thinking.
18) A basket, again, Love it, but the tone of the basket doesn't match anything in the house, also there's a bit of a hole in the bottom.
19) A silly impulse purchase from the As Is section at Ikea. This vase was on sale for $1 I bought it and tried to like it . . . but I don't.
20) A couple of bolster pillows we used to use in our townhouse bedroom. I like 'em, Lee hates them. Because Lee hates them, they never made their way onto our current bed. For that reason they have to go as well.
21) Two candle pillars I bought from Homesense 3 years ago for $9 and $7 dollars. Again, something I really like but has never been able to find a place for.
We ended up going through not only our storage but also . . . our kitchen, our library, and our closets!
On top of all our Home Decor related items we were also able to purge . . .
50 items of clothing (that went to my favorite teenager :)
10-15 books
A set of tea cups we never used
An old coffee maker
A bread machine I never use (I started making it myself and it's so much better . . . recipe to follow next week).
Some old dog dishes (Max is picky about what he eats out of)
A couple of mismatched mugs
People ask me all the time how our cupboards stay so organized and it's because I purge regularly. How many coffee cups do two people need?? A set of 4 white coffee mugs can run you less than $10, for my cupboards it's worth the investment. Buy a matching set and do away with the mismatched chaos . . . unless that's your thing, then go for it! :)
I feel like I lost 10 lbs! The house feels lighter. I feel lighter! Never underestimate a good declutter it can do wonders for your home, your mood and if you donate it, it can do wonders for someone else! It's a true Win Win.
I hope you enjoyed today's post, it wasn't an easy one for me to write. No one likes to admit they've made bad decisions/ wasted money/ or just plain did something wrong. But blogs should be about the good, some bad, and some ugly. Today was the bad but this afternoon we have something GOOD for you. We're on I Heart Organizing, talking about organizing our laundry room!
Make sure to pop back later today! We posted on I heart Organizing, all about organizing our laundry room!! :) We'll have the link up here this afternoon.

I'm a big de-clutterer too. I love your strategy - I'm awful about getting rid of stuff for the house (I'll get rid of everything but decor!) so this may be a good thing for me to try!
ReplyDeleteI have recently moved from a large stone 5 bedroom house to a tiny two bedroom after children house I purged de cluttered and basicly filled a thrift shop now I am missing some of it so much. But I will live without it. Another yard sale next weekend to get rid of more stuff.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Shirley
Too bad we don't live close by. I would love to go through your donate pile. :) I love to have a decluttered, organized home too. It definately makes me feel less stressed when everything is in its place. Can't wait to see your post on IHeart Organizing. :)
ReplyDeleteDe-cluttering is such an amazing feeling! It feels great knowing that you are getting things out of your house that you no longer need, and it feels great you are passing it along to someone else who can use it (my purged piles either go to Goodwill or are listed on Freecycle). And it seems that as soon as I get rid of one box of items I've got another one started. It never ends! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove your blog Ash!
I LOVE getting rid of things...husband, on the other hand, does not. I like your idea about boxing things up for a bit before they permanently leave your home - great idea!
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow housewife I completely relate to this post. I HATE admitting that there are things we (rather I) have purchased and have never used. So we hoard them in one of the many closets in the house, despite regular re-organizing. You've inspired me to get serious about our de-cluttering schedule!
ReplyDeletei like your idea of putting all those things that you think you don't need in a box to the garage for 2 months...if you don't need it then it goes OUT of your house for good without opening it! i will definitely steal this idea!
ReplyDeletesome of your things that are on your list could look pretty in my home, too bad we don't live close...lol!!
really love your blog!

I also feel like a cluttered mess when my house is a cluttered mess! I declutter in a very similar fashion. I love putting a decor item that I'm not sure if I want anymore out when guests come over. If they comment on the item in a positive fashion, I give it to them! I find that I'm much more likely to give it away in that moment than to take it to a donation center. But other things go into a box into the garage and randomly, the hubs will take it to a new home. :)
ReplyDeleteI will seriously buy the #13 (VW print) from you!! PLEASE =)

Keep the crutches. Getting rid of them is like tempting Murphy...
ReplyDelete;)
I would seriously buy a lot of things from that list...the Goodwill shoppers in your area are very very lucky indeed!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Donate your stuff to me! Lol great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love decluttering too... reading this post has given me the urge to do it some more when i get home today :) My husband on the other hand does not like to do it at all. He wants to save everything. He has pants that are 6 years old that he never wears (& don't fit) that he refuses to get rid of. *Sigh*

ReplyDeleteI, too, love the results of a decluttered home (and the process of decluttering!). A few months ago I went on a big decluttering kick and wound up with 8 large plastic tote boxes and 6 medium-large cardboard boxes filled with stuff we don't use anymore (the "easy to get rid of" items). Our community had a big yard sale and then a charity truck came by to pick up the leftovers...and we don't miss anything we got rid of one bit! I am very inspired by your blog, though, and plan to do a more "cut throat" decluttering this month (finally get rid of the items I hold on to out of guilt). ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I found your blog! I just came over to visit from your post on IHeart Organizing. I, too, am a housewife (for 2 years now) and get tired of people asking what I do as well! I love the 50's and creating a home for my husband and our furry dog children. Thank you SO much for your blog! I can't wait to read more!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it feel good?!! I need to go through our home once more before the holidays. We cleared out a ton last year, scaled down quite a bit, but held onto a few things we were unsure of and now they can go too. A couple years ago I went to all white dishes and serveware and have a collection of clear glass as well. Goes with anything. Who needs 20 different patterns?
ReplyDeletePlease come for a visit!!
ReplyDeleteI just looked at your discard items and wanted to save several items. ;)
Please share more about your strategies for decluttering your clothes.
So glad you posted this. I always feel GUILTY when I get rid of things that are perfectly fine, fashionable, but yet just don't work in my home...especially when I've spent some $$ on them.
ReplyDeleteAwww man, if I lived next door I would totally be decluttering you of those yellow pillows! I hear you though I feel borderline crazy when my house is cluttered!
ReplyDeleteOh, oh,oh, why not spray paint your #19 wicker baskets. A dark chocolate brown would look wood tone and you would be recycling. And thanks for the reminder that it is time to start purging before Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I don't live next door to you because I would be "rescuing" your "clutter"! That's some pretty wonderful stuff there and someone will be very happy to have it in their home!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! I'm hoping to go that same route of de-clutter when move back into our house and just buy and bring only items we love in our house! Love this post and love how cut throat you are about getting rid of whats not working
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your post on IHeart Organizing SO much, especially the PIGGY BANK! How brilliant! Wish I'd thought of it!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I would say keep crutches but just for few more years. I had torn ligament in my ankle when I was 13 and had surgery. It took me about 10 years for it feel like normal. During that 10 years it hurts on and off if walk too much or running. But Im 40 now and my feet is healed and no more hurting because I wear proper shoe now.
ReplyDeleteI love de-clutter and I try rid as many thing I could that Im no longer use in my apartment. I wanted thing to be more lighter like how you feel about your house. About 75 % of husband's stuff still in storage but about 50% are military items that cannot be rid of while he is still in military but 25% is his stereo systems that he doesn't want rid of because he bought them in Korea 25 years ago. But Hopefully he will let them go once we move again.
You should raffle these off (or do a giveaway!). There are a few items I would love to have!
ReplyDeleteAaaah, my hoarding tendencies want all your stuff. :) Why don't you repurpose the wire house candleholder to an outside bird feeder of some sort?
ReplyDeleteI loved that little telescope! No place for it now?
ReplyDeleteHow can you be getting rid of that adorable print of the punch buggy (we call them slug bugs! haha). If you have not gotten rid of it already, I would be happy happy happy to take it off of your hands~! seriously. Let me know.

You are my HERO!! I can so relate - especially on the coffee mugs! I try to keep in mind whether I "Use, Need or Love" the item, per the Flylady program. Like another person said, there are some things I miss, but I will get over it. I have designated one bin for home decor items that I would consider re-using someday, but so far, I find myself giving the things away instead.
ReplyDeleteI go on regular clutter busting missions throughout the house and the hardest part for me is parting with something I bought but never found a place or use for. It makes me feel like I've wasted money. I've been reading "You Can Buy Happiness, and it's Cheap" and it's really made me stop and think before making any purchase. We'll be downsizing in a couple of years and I want to be ready and clutter free by then.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
I know I need to do some purging. I just took 3 huge boxes and two tables to the thrift store, but then I see the stuff you are getting rid of and think that I would buy them if I saw them at the thrift store! It's a vicious cycle but since I do buy so much from thrift stores I figure I am helping a charity when I buy and when we donate. There are worse habits I guess!
ReplyDeleteI love posts like this. You've come such a long way and your house is beautiful! Thanks for allowing us to see it! I NEED that fireplace in my room!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell said, the state of home has a great impact on us and if house is de-cluttered we too feel messy and cluttered. The best way to de-clutter things at home is to donate for charity, sell things for a little lower price and store them in self storage units.
ReplyDeleteOk...a little late but I so want #7,8,9 and 15! haha I just re-found your blog (read it before and then life happened ;) ) Enjoying reading all your posts and I just LOVE your home and look forward to reading more.
