That's right . . . our sweet peaceful suburban neighborhood has been taken over by hardened criminals. Okay, so they're less hardened criminals and more like petty thieves or more accurately bored teenagers on summer break.
I decided that this summer was the summer to outfit the front porch (shown below with the red arrow).
We already had some porch furniture from our townhouse deck. But what we were lacking was porch cushions, somehow the original cushions were lost in the move, note to future movers, don't store your cushions in garbage bags to move, people will think they are garbage and throw them out!
We found a new set of Sunbrella cushions at Homesense, I put them on the chairs and they fit perfectly I was so excited. The next night Lee ran into our neighbor who mentioned that they were on their 3rd set of outdoor cushions because some "little Buggar" keeps stealing them. I ran out front and pulled all of the cushions inside! I did not want to risk loosing $100 worth of outdoor cushion (btw, WOW outdoor cushions are expensive!).
The next day I ran out to Zellers (it's basically like Canadian Target, although it's no where near as good as target!) and picked up a lockable BOX!
First we took some seriously exact measurements: Lee can lie down on our porch love seat with his head and legs hanging over the edges so if he could fit his torso in the box the cushion will fit. But how do you measure that?? The most hilarious way possible, you shove your 6'8" husband into a box in the middle of a store!
Now that you've recovered from that image where are we? . . . ? Right! We picked up a $50 box (marked down from $100), to save our $100 cushions! $50 might seem like a lot of money to spend, but I figured it would also be a great place to store the cushions over winter, and with our neighbors cushions being stolen twice already I didn't see it as spending $50 I saw it as saving $100!
We placed it against the wall:
Behind our Love seat:
You can't even see it! It completely blends into the color of the love seat!
The box comes with 4 BIG screws and 4 washers so we were able to screw it down to the deck.
And lastly we'll be able to snap on a lock and make sure no Dirty Rotten Cushion Thieves get our new Cushions!
We're really happy with our new safe and secure outdoor cushion box. I think it will be the perfect spot to place a small plant when we start outfitting our front porch for a end of summer party later this month!
Here they are all tucked in safe and sound!!
There's even a bit of room in there for a couple of throw pillows and maybe an outdoor blanket or two!

great idea. that really stinks that someone would stoop so low for outdoor chair cushions!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good thing with your box, we also need one. You should also install an outdoor light with a motion sensor. It scares people off if they stand in the middle of your porch and the light goes on.
ReplyDeleteJule
That stinks! The box should work, just too bad you have to go to that length to keep your property safe. And agreed, motion sensor lights are perfect for this kind of thing. The problem is they are usually not very attractive!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I wish I was in the store when you asked your husband to get in the box! Too funny! :)
ReplyDeleteWait, your husband is 6-foot-8-inches tall!!!??? How tall are you?! That's awesome...I love tall guys!
ReplyDeleteboo to neighbourhood thieves! I'm glad they didn't get your cushions, though.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have a bone to pick with you. I feel like at least once a week, you talk about some great find you picked up at HomeSense. Damn you, Ashli! I am now making weekly visits and always leave with more than I intended and sometimes, not even what I went in for in the first place! Last night, my plan was to swing in and see if they had any pizza stones (I swear to god, I used to have some but kitchen elves must have stolen them). I left with exactly zero pizza stones but a pepper grinder for my mom, false eyelashes (don't ask!) and an adorable package of blank note cards. You know what this means? It means I will go to a difference HomeSense today to see if they have pizza stones. I fear what I'll come home with tonight, all your fault! :)
HA! cute pic of Lee! You wouldnt think in a cute little niehbourhood that would happen....sad state of affairs!! Hope you are well!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I want one of those boxes for outdoor toy storing!
ReplyDeleteTo mitigate the costs of outdoor cushions, I bought outdoor fabric at Fabric.com and sewed them myself (using your envelope pillow tutorial). I put the cushions over gently used outdoor cushions I bought on CraigsList! I will do a post on this next week.
ReplyDeleteWell that is just awful! And I was complaining about getting doorbell ditched! Hey, maybe you should keep Lee in there and leave in unlocked- big guy like that jumping out when they try to get in there might solve the problem! :) And LOVE your whole porch set up. Can't wait to see what you do for the party.
ReplyDeleteYou should set some bait for the teenage burglars and then have your husband hide in the box. When they come and make their attempt to burglarize you, he jumps out of the box and scares the living "milk and cookies" out of them.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness....laughing my butt off over your hubbie in the box. I fully intend to show this to my (grown) daughters. They roll their eyes at me when I whip my tape measure out of my purse while we shop the aisles of Target. Now I can say...it's either the tape measure or I'm gettin' in the box!
ReplyDeleteThieves suck. Awesome photo of Lee. Great idea!!
ReplyDeleteThat is ridiculously DUMB!!!! Who the heck would do that??? Hooligans ...... but really?? Bad karma, that's all I can say. Anyhooo I love your new box, Jay and I were looking for one of those so I know now where to get one. Thanks Ash.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea on the box...and even better idea on how to measure the box! Ha! And to think all these years I have just been carrying around a boring old tape measure! Love the cushions too!!
ReplyDeleteIt's such a shame that it's come to that! You should be able to have your front porch decorated the way you like without some inconsiderate person stealing your things. I hate it when you work hard for something and someone takes it away. We landscaped our front garden, and someone stole the solar lights we had marking the path and driveaway. Needless to say, they haven't been replaced.
ReplyDeleteThe box looks great and so do the cushions! Such a pretty place to sit.
Seriously....brilliant! You guys are such DO-ERS!!! I think the whole world would look lazy compared to you two. '
ReplyDeleteSo what every happened to that "Don't you wish I was your husband" Blog that I suggested Lee should start. LOL.
Hopefully, now that your cushions are safe, those lousy thieves won't steal your outdoor furniture - that's what happened to us. All of it just disappeared overnight - made me so mad!
ReplyDeleteLike another commenter, I sewed my own cushion covers over existing chair cushions I had. I would be LIVID if someone stole them after all that!
ReplyDeleteOh no!! Bad teenagers! That reminds me of how when I was little all the neighborhoods used to do huge outdoor Christmas decoration contests, until it got so competitive and bored teenagers decided to be mean and start stealing blown up Santa and Mr. Snowman :( that ended the contest fun once people had to put signs up "Sorry but our Santa was stolen"
ReplyDeleteGlad you have outsmarted those buggy kids!!
That is ridiculous! Why can't people just be respectful of other's property! I like how you dealt with it! I am always afraid of whatever I put out front will disappear too! So far, so good.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why they will steal something like that? Oh well thieves steal anything.
ReplyDeleteFantastic ideas on thwarting crime in your neighborhood! I have been sitting here just gazing upon your house for the past hour. I decided I have to know the colors of the exterior. Do you happen to know what they are? I'm in the US but would love to see if you have a clue about them. Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine your gorgeous coushins being thrown out in the garbage can, what a shame! Little buggars are everywhere arent they, stealing coushins what else are they going to do. I had someone drop a concrete slab on my car bonnet on Saturday night while my car was parked in my driveway, we are almost finished buidling a double garage to lock the cars up, they just had to cause damage just before I can park my car away safely! Anyways your box looks great and $50 is a small price to pay for peace of mind :)
