Some people keep their skeletons in the closet, we keep ours in the basement . . . and by skeletons I mean THIS: Da Da Daaaaaaa!
This stripy mess is also known as the carpet in our basement! The worst part is, it's new! Somebody outside of the 70's chose this carpet, installed it, then stepped back and said "Yup that looks good!" We were lucky enough to get in and make some choices while our house was being built, but please understand that THIS WAS NOT MY CHOICE!!!! hehe
During our Most Productive Weekend ever Lee tackled some much needed drywall and baseboards in the basement.
So now when you walk down the basement steps you see this:
Someday, soon hopefully, we'll replace the carpet in the basement but for now it has to stay.
I added a deer head that my mom bought for us last Christmas, she picked it up from Home Hardware for $25, it's actually a Christmas decoration and was covered in sparkles. We rubbed off as many of the sparkles as possible then spray painted it white.
We also added a couple of framed photos of our little Max and our first puppy Olive.
On the left is our Utility Closet, it goes all the way under the steps which is where we store a lot of our seasonal items. It also holds our Hot Water Tank and our furnace.
On the right is the home of our future gym. It just an empty room now but with a new floor, some mirrors, a bench and treadmill we'll have our own small home gym!
I hope that you can see past the carpet, although if you can you'll be one step ahead of me because I cannot! We're planning to start work on the gym this fall, just in time to work off some Thanksgiving Dinner! :) hehe

It's not all THAT bad.
ReplyDeleteI have the same deer head from HH.. never thought of spray painting and using it year round! You are smart and I am copying you! :)
ReplyDeleteIs your basement really that tiny? Only two rooms? Or are you keeping us from more skeletons? ;) Jackie
ReplyDeleteI like the carpet. Don't be snobby.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the carpet. Don't be an anonymous comment troll.
DeleteOh wait...
I'm going to say it, I LIKE the carpet. My favourite colour is topaz (our entire open concept living and dining room is painted in it) and when we were picking carpet for the stairs up out of that space, had I believed for a second that the stringers on my 105 year old stairs were straight enough to handle stripes, I might well have picked this carpet.
ReplyDeleteI actually like how in your space the colour picked out for the wall is the beige in the centre of the repeat to tone it down.
You don't HAVE to give it a chance, but if you are replacing the floor for the home gym you may want to just leave this for a bit of interest in the tiny landing.
The carpet isn't the best agreed but you could work with it!
ReplyDeleteI LIKE the carpet!! Ha ha, does that mean I have bad taste? I hope not! :)
ReplyDeleteThe carpet is fine.....it adds a bit of sunshine to the hallway. :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe it just photographs really well, but the carpet isn't all that bad. I can see where it wouldn't be your style based on the rest of the house, but I think you can totally make it work for the time being. :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe the internet isn't capturing the true harvest gold nastiness (I'm assuming due to your 70's reference)...but I really kinda like the carpet. The stripes look fresh. Maybe I have bad taste too. :)
ReplyDeleteIs this picture different from the floor plan you posted of your basement? I thought there were more rooms??
ReplyDeleteThere are, this is just the hallway and the gym! The other rooms are accessable from the outside only! i'll write a post about it one day when we're ready to tackle all that extra square footage!!
DeleteLots of Lov e

Ok either you take photos really well or the internet isn't showing your carpets true self but it's not all that bad. I kind of like it.. ok I admit I like it. Or maybe its how you have the hall styled that is making it look good. I say give it a chance and maybe it will grow on you.
ReplyDeleteLove the deer head.
Sounds like I"m not the only one but I like the carpet! I like that it's retro (without being 40 years old and having all the nastiness that would come with a 40 year old carpet). Hmmmm.....I'm 40 years old. Now there's something to think about. Haha.
ReplyDeleteYep, I like the carpet!
Oh crap....I'm actually almost 42. How easy we forget.
ReplyDeleteAs I am far away enough😜 I dare to say: it reminds me of infants you-know-what-i-mean. And the latter can even be of a much nicer sunnier yellow than that thing on the floor down there. Go for some dark wood(like) floor.
