In almost every home we've had together, we've had a fish tank. Maybe it's because Lee is an Aquarius and has a natural affinity to water, or maybe it's because fish are good feng shui, or maybe it's because in another life I was a mermaid!
The reason that we've waited so long to put one in here is because . . . Generally fish tanks are UGLY! There I said it!
We were at Petsmart buying birdseed for Carson, and there it was . . . a pretty fish tank. And double bonus it's also a fountain! The water bubbles out over the top and lands back into the tank. It's like the perfect feng shui tank . . . then I read the box and it's called the CHI tank it was built with feng shui principles in mind! (Tank on the right is the picture off of the box, the Tank on the left is how it looks on our console table).
There are no visible wires and obvious filters. The small square at the top holds the filter and the lights. The water gets sucked up through the bottom of the square then spilled gently over the top and back into the tank.
I also loved that there are all different accessories for it (this girl LOVES her some accessories ;).
So for around $60 we brought it home.
We chose the front hall console because:
-We can see the tank from the Library (soon to be Office) and watching fish swim is a proven de-stresser and Anxiety reducer (something welcomed and needed in an office).
&
-It's on the East side of our house which, according to feng shui, should bring energy, ambition, health and family luck.
We filled it with water and let it cycle (run) for about a week to make sure everything is balanced and good and then we added two fish! Why is there only one fish in the tank now, you ask????
Well clearly it's because the other goldfish jumped out and Max ate it!! Seriously, I'm not joking! We filled the tank a bit too full and the fish jumped out landed on the carpet, and before we could get to it, Max ate it!
I debated telling you guys about this, I felt really bad for the fish, and I don't want to upset anybody about his terrible demise, but we share almost everything on Mini Manor, the good, the bad and now the truly disgusting!
We now keep the water level lower and Goldie Hawn hasn't jumped out so we feel comfortable adding another one sometime soon.
Here's how it looks on the console:
And for those of you wanting to see another angle of the carpet, here's one looking at the the front door:
I hope you like our new fish tank as much as we do. I think My favorite part is the trickling noise it makes as the water bubbles out of the top, and over the rocks.
Welcome Home Goldie Hawn!!! (Sorry about your buddy).

Is it terrible to kind of chuckle at the thought of Max eating the fish? :) My one dog would have probably done the same. A fountain/fish tank is a great idea. I love the sound of fountains. I want one for our deck, but they are kind of expensive. I always love pics of your house... it's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThat was both hilarious and entertaining. Poor fishy! But I do agree with you fish tanks are ugly!!! We have one in my daughters bedroom on her dresser (it's her hobby with Dad)and they are under strict instructions to look after it, keep it clean or out it goes. They have tropical fish in it, so a bit more maintenance and needs a proper filter system and monthly visits to collect beach water, which isn't a problem as we live only 5 minutes from the beach. BUT....I wish we had one that looked as pretty as yours...sigh...no ugly filter on top and lovely trickling sounds. Enjoy yours for me :)
ReplyDeleteSo, Max likes sushi ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the fish tank....I too love the sound of them.
Call me mean, but I think its funny! I can totally see our dog doing the exact same thing. Oh and I love love LOVE that tank! We've been talking about getting a fish or 2, and I've wanted a fountain for a while now too. What a neat way to combine the 2! Its gorgeous, it works with feng shui, what more could you ask for? :)
ReplyDeleteAh I love that tank! It looks so pretty there!
ReplyDeleteI love that fish tank! It is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove the fish tank! Just from experience, Goldfish are better in pairs. They live longer together. And I love the name of your fish, Goldie Hawn, too cute.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a gorgeous home! So beautiful. Love your newest addition ;)
ReplyDeleteOMG- sushi! Ha! The tank is super pretty though! Love all the photos you post of your home.
ReplyDeleteOh wow that is such a beautiful fish tank! I love it! Sadly we don't even have anywhere to put a tank atm :( I'm sorry to hear about your fish though, I hope Goldie Hawn gets a new little buddy soon!
ReplyDeleteYou may already know this, but when a fish jumps out of the tank, it's usually because the pH of the water isn't correct. Make sure you're testing the water. The front hall looks great by the way.
ReplyDeleteCertainly a "remember that time..." story that I'm sure will stay a part of your family's collection for years to come. Can't help but chuckle a litte.
ReplyDeleteEverything looks lovely, from tank to art to flowers. The idea that you are not artistic because you can't draw like your sister is most definately false! Your home shows just how creative you are!
Thanks for posting the pics towards the door. My husband and I are throwing around the idea of dolling up our own mini manor after 12 years of ownership. The first thing on the list is crown. We have a lot of awkward "endings" in our home and the crown above your door shows a true to life (not just a brochure - though it could be) representation of how ending crown can look.
love the name...just for the record we once had a fish named "Gato" (that's cat in spanish) and a cat named "Mouse". I think we are allowed to have fun names for our pets. BTW..I'm curious to know the florring you have just inside your front door...Thanks
ReplyDeletehaha Love it, my sister called her dog . . . dog for like a year, not very original but it worked.
DeleteThe tile inside the front door is the same Travertine tile that we have in the kitchen, powder room and laundry room.
I don't like going from outside on to wood floors so tile was a must have!

I shouldn't laugh, but it was pretty funny. Poor Fish. We have been thinking about getting a fish tank however they are fugly, no? I love the one you guys decided to go with it , it looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the prettiest fish tanks I have ever seen! Congratulations on your purchase! Looks amazing! I too laughed about the fish (which I know I shouldn't, but we women paint a picture of what happened right away so...Lol)! I have a small fish tank and have to change the water at least once in 3 weeks.

so much for spring cleaning....its very dusty under the dresser!
ReplyDeleteSomeday I would like to be just as cool as cool as you. Oh to live an unfulfilled life...and to have enough time to visit a blog and look for dust. Jealous much!?!
DeleteYour house is beyond beautiful Ashli!!!!!! I was just telling my friend the other day that if I ever won the lottery, I would pay to have YOU come decorate my house. Lol! I guess I'd have to hire a maid to come and dust my house too...just in case the dust police would ever show up ;)
-Heather F.
Pssshhtttt to the person above me. How rude!! Your home looks lovely and they must have been looking for dirt in order to see anything!! (Not that I can anyway.)
ReplyDeleteI don't imagine they get invited round to other people's homes much if they're so pedantic. Humph.
I only came into the comments to say all that's missing from your post is a picture of Max looking suitably guilty - the poor fish deserved that much at least lol!!
Love the tank, and the name Goldie Hawn too!
Thanks Maggie!!!!
DeleteOkay, someone beat me to the "Max loves sushi" joke! I have been giggling on and off all day!! Just now got a chance to comment. Can't tell you having grown up with 3 siblings and raising 2 girls of our own how many fish we have...ahem...sent to "fishy heaven" via the sewer lines! Yes, I know...cruel, but are ya really going to bury the darn things? (we did bury one of our dead koi in our garden one year...the plants were huge that year, come to think of it, LOL) I have been wanting to get another beta fish.
ReplyDeleteAnd, regarding anonymous...REALLY???????? Obviously someone with WAAAAAY too much time on their hands if they have to go looking for things like that and then have the nerve to comment! Remind me not to invite them to my house!!!
And, a pic of Max with a sheepish grin would have been priceless!!
Thanks Lauren!!
DeleteThat's such a classy fish tank. Nice find! And I actually think it's funny that Max ate the flying fish.
ReplyDeletePeople can be SO RUDE!! It's always interesting to me that the people who make negative comments hide behind the veil of anonymity!! Hmm...
ReplyDeleteYour fish tank looks amazing, and I had to giggle at the thought of little Max eating the fish! How did he chew it? Didn't you once say he as no teeth? Did he swallow it whole? Oh my word!
Love your new rug, the flooring, and how nice the whole entry looks!
xo-Lisa
Thanks Lisa!!!
DeleteI'm pretty sure he swallowed it whole . . . he only has the 3 teeth so chewing is out of the question. The three teeth don't even line up with each other haha.
It was a pretty small fish . . . but ewwwwwww none the less! haha
Thanks again! You're the best!
Lots of Love
Ashli
I have been debating buying that same tank for a few weeks now! I had read somewhere online that some fish are more "jumpy" than others and so my fear took over and I never ended up purchasing one! I am sorry one of your little fish jumped out :( - I have little dogs also and very highly suspect they would have done the same thing. I think I might just be brave and give this tank a try (keeping the water level lower like you suggested).
ReplyDeleteLove the fish tank!! Sorry about the fish, but I am wondering too like another commenter, did he swallow it whole or gnaw on it? LOL
ReplyDeleteAs to the person who said fish jump out due to PH issues, well that isn't always true. Some fish will jump out of the tank regardless, that is why most fish tanks have lids. I have had fish jump out when startled, or even if I left the lid open too long! One time I noticed I was missing a goldfish. Well I looked about and found him shriveled and dried up on the carpet. I put him back in the tank (he was still alive!) and he lived for years and years after that! ;-)
Also, is Carson still in the library? We don't get to see much of him anymore!! :-/
--Jillian
haha Because Max only has 3 teeth I'm assuming he swallowed it whole (it was just a little fish). He probably swished it around his mouth then swallowed it like he does with his food hehe.
DeleteYes, Carson is still in the library. It's about time he got a little blog post of his own! I'll write one up for him soon!!! He's been needing a new cover so maybe I'll get cracking on that soon!!!
Lots of Love
Ashli
LOVE your tank. We have a huge tank but it's in my husbands home office. I totally agree that it is so hard to find a tank that doesn't look like it belongs in a fraternity house. When we bought our first home, that was my husbands big wish, a fish tank. So glad they are designing better looking ones. Love the feng shui aspect too! (And we used to sit in front of it with our boys when they were babies and it put them to sleep every time-really!)
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited!!! Did you see the blog love you got from Megan at "Honey We're Home" blog on April 4th?? You've have to check it out. I'm so happy because I love you both and have been following you both your blog and hers for such a long time!
ReplyDeleteI Did!!!! It was so nice of Megan to do a post on us!!!! I love her blog too! and her little guy is too cute for words :)

We had a gold fish that my son won at a carnival that lived for 4 years and grew so big we had to keep replacing the tank with a bigger one ! One day while my son and I were eating lunch at the counter, he jumped out right onto the counter with us ! Fortunately, we were right there, and I scooped him up and put him back in ! I really didn't know before that, that fishes did that ! So funny.....
ReplyDeleteI love your new addition, Ashli! Very pretty fish tank! Your home is just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteFish do that....the fish at my son's school jumped out of the tank and died overnight...then the next day the tank got a leak....they weren't having much fun. My sister got some fish and she tried unsuccessfully for 6 months to keep them alive...I think truely it's luck of the draw with fish!! I do love the tank....and hopefully Max won't think this is his new "doggy treats"....live fish!!! Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia
ReplyDeleteluv luv luv this tank!! one reason why i never really have wanted a fish is the whole ugly fish tank thing too! i just showed this to hubster and he was excited that i finally found something i like and lil buckeroo was beyond excited. he's wanted another one since he was little guy, he's promised me a gazillion times "I promise I WILL keep my hands outta this tank!" he always wanted to 'pet' his fishies and well you for a long time he thought our toilet went directly to walmart to make the fishies well. After two we packed away the fish tank, lol, i thot once it would have been a diseased fish then twice i figured it was definitely his hands in the tank.
ReplyDeleteI love that fish tank! It is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I love fur babies! And I adore the rug! Do tell where you got it :)
ReplyDeleteHi Allie,
DeleteThe Rug is from Canadian Tire, here in Canada. If your in the States . . . RUGS USA have a couple that look really similar for around the $200 price!
Hope that helps
Ashli
Hello Ashli!! First things first, I absolutely adore your blog. I suffer from a bit of OCD & feel a constant need to perfect everything in my life & home & your blog helps to justify that to My Husband haha! I love fish & have actually seen this tank also getting bird seed for my birds Gemma & Silas & have really debated on purchasing it. Do you have any other feng shui tips? Once again, love love your blog, you inspire me everyday. Between your blog & "Honey Were Home", the possibilities to continue to strive for a beautifully organized & warm home are endless!!!
