This post was almost titled "I Freak'in Made that!"
Originally I was hoping to do a How To: Make a slipcover for your ottoman, But I still have no Idea how I pulled this off. It's my first sewing project, outside of making pillows and Some how it turned out!
We use to have a large ikea ektorp ottoman between the chairs, but it took up way too much valuable floor space. So we took it away, but we found once there was nothing there no one sat in those chairs. So we needed to find a white ottoman to match the chairs, that was small. It was very hard to find in our price range, which was under $100.
I finally found a round ottoman at target for $49. But it was totally the wrong colors, nothing wrong with it, it just didn't match our living room. I bought it anyways and phoned around to find a seamstress who could make a slipcover for it. I was quoted $200 not including fabric, and $175 not including fabric. I tried to hid my surprise and politely said I'd think about it. I set out to sew it myself, knowing that if I screwed it up it would only cost me $12 in fabric.
So I measured, I cut, I sewed, I ripped seams open and sewed again . . . and again!
And eventually it ended up like this:
From:
and in case I encounter someone who doesn't believe I made it my self, I can prove it. I was stabbed multiple times by pins, and there are tiny flecks of my DNA sewn into every stitch. :) It's like a signature for seamstresses! :)
Total Cost:
$49 for Ottoman from Target
$12 for Fabric from Jo Ann Fabric
a litre or two of my blood, sweat, and tears $0

ReplyDeleteFabulous! This is the first time I'm posting, but know I have been following you for some time now. I just love your organized approach to your home...and your style...and your writing...I've been a SAHM for almost 10 years and I just love everything house and home. Thanks for all the tips. One thing I've always wanted to do is learn to sew...maybe Christmas I need to ask for a sewing machine. It's time.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day!
Oh...was there a pattern you used for your slipcover?
Jen xo

I actually saw this in Target this weekend and thought "that would look so cute slipcovered!" And, it's does ... great job. It's adorable :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome job! I would have been afraid to tackle something "round" myself ...give me straight corners and I'm a wiz-bang of a seamstress :)
ReplyDeleteJan @ BellaCasa
Seriously, is there anything you can't do???!!! Oh wait, you said you weren't artistic! LOL Great job Ashli.
ReplyDeleteWowsers! Way to go girl!
ReplyDeleteQuestion: why are there 2x4s under the chair... did I miss details on that somewhere? Is it part of the chair?
The ottoman looks great! Which fabric did you use? I've been looking for a reasonably-priced fabric to recover a couple of chairs and I like that the one you picked covers the original zebra pattern :)
ReplyDeleteVery impressive!! It looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWow Ashli, good job!!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this is your first sewing project! It looks awesome, professional, superb!!
ReplyDeleteSoooooooo pretty! Great job, girl!
ReplyDeleteYou attempted piping AND pleats on your first major project? You're so brave! It turned out AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone! I'm so glad you all liked it too!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like I'll be putting together a make shift how to: as long as No one laugh at my un-orthodox sewing techiniques. :)
Anonymous:
I used white denim from the fabric store. It didn't completely cover the zebra print so I ripped the zebra print off :)
Tara:
You didn't miss anything this weekend Lee sat on the chair and one of the legs was already kind of wiggley and the two front legs broke off. We'll buy new legs as soon as I can get to ikea again!!
Simply Jen:
I think you should totally get a sewing machine for christmas!
I didn't use a pattern, because I didn't know they made patterns for slipcovers, hehe so I just measured and cut and sewed, kind of guerrilla sewing :)
So it looks like a How To: is in the works :)
Actually Lee sat on the chair and broke it a few weekends ago, now that I think of it. Looks like I should get my butt to ikea and buy some replacement legs!! The wood is just what we had in the garage to fix it with, it's like Macgyver's over here! Next time Lee gets an elastic band, a paper clip and hair spray to fix it with :)
ReplyDeleteI don't like to sew, but every time I see something that you've made, I want to get my machine out and start. Maybe I'll learn to like it? Beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteCan I be first in line to order one of these?!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you do that.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Ashli. It's beautiful!!
I am so impressed. You did a great job and it looks great with the chair.
ReplyDeleteThat looks fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteYou should totally make an "I Freak'in Made that!" button for each time you create something and share it on your blog!
I would be proud of that....congrats on a job well done.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!!!
ReplyDeleteI am ridiculously proud of you. And I don't even know you. Very impressive.
