Flowers on Friday: White

A little white bouquet on the mantel beside the star. If you caught last week's flowers on Friday you saw my two bouquets of roses and mums . . . . the roses died faster than the mums so I pulled them out and made a smaller arrangement for the mantel!

Hope everyone has a great weekend, Lee will be working on making the barn door, and I'll be planting more spring bulbs. Can't wait to share our progress next week.

Changes in the Living Room

Heed my warning . . . homesense is dangerous!! hehe In a good way!

I went into Homesense to find a wedding gift for two of our closest friends when I heard the clearance isle calling to me . . . "ashli" . . . "ashli, why don't you come back here and take a look" . . .  I'm not going to tell you everything the clearance isle said to me, but lets just say it got pretty rude. I finally had to go back there just to make it stop ;)

While I was there I spotted a couple of pillows, just little green guys sticking out. They were the exact shade of green found in our living room lamps,

So I pulled them out to get a better look at them.
They were small, with the little white leave on their wool covers, and feather down  inserts . . .
I couldn't put them back, they made their way into my heart and therefore into my cart, then subsequently into our living room.

I think they're perfect for our living room, they bring the green from our lamps over to the other side of the room!!

Guest Room Hooks

 Because 99% of our guests are weekend guests, and really none of our 'long term' guests are posh enough to require a whole closet full of hanging space, we decided that the guest room closet is the perfect place for a Craft Room.
Now, more to the point of this post.
Because of the closet craft room, our guests will need a spot to hang up one or two items so clearly hooks were called for.

We picked our hooks up from Urban Barn, and they're from the Umbra line. This picture doesn't do the hooks justice, they're clear acrylic hooks, shaped like tree branches. I LOVE 'em!

Today I'm planting spring bulbs, some purple tulips and crocus :) I LOVE FALL!!

Barn Door Research

We spent all summer looking for old salvaged door that we could turn into a barn door. I survived a rat sighting, a moth attack, walking into the world's biggest spider web (and instantly becoming a karate master) and a very pushy salesmen who thought he could push me into buying a door that was too small (seriously . . . I can't negotiate my door size).

Here's the door we want to replace. It's a great door but we can't close with out moving the dining room chairs out of the way first, and because it separates the laundry room from the main living area it's really important that it closes.
Lee's decided that because we've had NO luck finding a door . . . he would make one! As well as make the hardware for it too In case you were wondering HOW, Lee can weld and is very skilled at metal work. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, he's a keeper :)

Today we're headed out to The Po (That's what we call The Home Depot, I have no idea why??) to gather supplies, and I've baked a Pie for our neighbor, a thank you for borrowing his table saw, so we're about half way there ;)

Flowers on Friday: Apology Edition

So I'll set the scene, it's 5pm Friday evening, I'm waiting for Lee to get home from work.
One hour later . . . still waiting so I call his cell phone, it rings for a while and goes to voicemail. I'm a little worried but not too concerned, it's not totally unusual for Lee to come home around 6pm.
Another hour passes, I call his cell again . . .  again he didn't answer, that's not like Lee usually he'll either answer right away or call back soon after. NOW I'm worried.

Long story short by the time he made it home, just past 8:30pm, I had already planned his funeral, was wearing black and ready to start my life over as a widower (I move fast).

The REASON:
 About 3 weeks ago friends of ours asked Lee to help them replace their old powder room sink and toilet. Lee totally forgot to tell me, in fact he forgot it was this Friday he was suppose to help. He left his phone in the car so he didn't hear my calls. But in his words "I knew I was in trouble when I saw 7 missed calls from Home".

So on his way home he picked up, sorry I left my phone in the car roses :)  and sorry I forgot to tell you in the first place, flowers. I was able to make two pretty bouquets out of them!
Don't tell Lee but I was just plain HAPPY he wasn't hurt that I didn't even need flowers . . . like I said don't tell Lee that!

On the plus side our friends new powder room is more eco-friendly with their dual flush toilet and their sink looks great! :)

Anyone received apology flowers lately??

Laundry Room: Ironing Board LOVE!

I wish I could open this post, by declaring my well thought out design plan for the laundry room, something like "I always planned on buying a crazy ironing board cover, that had the exact color of our laundry machines in it" but really I was shopping for Dr.Pepper Cherry in Target and while browsing I came across this fabulous cover for around $10. It was bright, fun and like I said before it has the exact color of our washer and dryer in it!

It's made by room essentials . . . you can't miss it, it's in a big orange package. And like I said it's was somewhere around $10, I can't find my receipt (sorry!). I hope you like it as much as I do. I thought a boring room like a laundry room could use a little whimsy!!

Book Review: Penny Pinchers Club

For possibly the first time I'm reviewing a novel!! :) I don't usually read novels . . . I don't know why (I'm very introspective as you can tell :p).
I'm much more of a non-fiction reader, I LOVE a book that can inspire me to do something, take some action, whether it's making greener choices, going organic, gardening or organizing I LOVE a good How To: usually this doesn't take me into the fiction side of the library with the exception of The Penny Pinchers Club.

I think The Penny Pinchers Club, by Sarah Strohmeyer bridges this gap, it inspired me to watch what I was spending money on, and showed new ways to save money while still being entertaining. The Situation Kat, the main character, finds herself in is a little bit of a stretch but the characters are so believable that you could almost imagine them in your own day to day life :)
Minus the handsome millionaire trying to marry you . . . I don't know about you but I don't have to many handsome millionaires begging me to marry them.
I think the Penny Pinchers Club is chick lit at it's finest. With the bonus of frugal inspiration, money saving TIPS, and a couple of steamy love scenes thrown in for your enjoyment, or maybe just
mine . . . (oh I hope my mom isn't reading this) (who am I kidding she probably is . . . HI MOM!)

I would definitely pick this one up! Now I'm finally going to bed after staying up well past 2am two nights in a row, reading the penny pinchers club!  Geez, I'm a sucker for a good book!

SOY vs. Paraffin Wax Candles!

** Warning: This Post Smells . . . . . great!! **

Since we're trying to keep things green around here we've banned all room sprays and home air fresheners.

 I read an article that tested 14 different air fresheners , the study concluded that many contained chemicals that could cause developmental and reproductive problems, especially for infants. It highlighted the presence of phthalates, chemicals that manufacturers use as plastic softeners and to hold fragrances. California and Washington have banned the sale of children's toys containing phthalates because of their link to hormonal disruptions and I find it highly questionable that they wouldn't also ban air fresheners that contain the exact same chemical.

So no home air fresheners for us! Opening all the windows and doors is still my number one tip for scenting our home (no scent at all is the best scent for me). But during the Winter months opening all the windows for an hour or so isn't going to happen, so we needed to find a way to naturally scent our home without all the chemicals. In a perfect world I would bake a pie everyday and make our home smell like pie all the time, but I have neither the time, nor the waistline for that! 

Moving on, (mmmmmmmm . . . pie)

A few months ago I did some research on the subject and found that SOY candles are the best way to scent your home without all the chemicals.  Off on a mission I went looking for SOY candles and I found that . . . . . SOY candles are EXPENSIVE!! I had no idea. Paraffin Candles are remarkably cheaper than soy candles so I grabbed a $4 Paraffin Wax candles and came home content in the money I saved.

I smugly thought to myself "why would you spend twice as much for a soy candle?" So like the researcher I am, I looked it up!

Turns out there are A LOT of reasons to spend more on SOY!

SOY

• Soy wax is made from soybeans and vegetables, both renewable resources.
• Soy wax burns much cleaner and purer as it is all natural, non-toxic, and non-hazardous.
• This wax is biodegradable leading to reduced landfills.
• Soy wax residue can be washed away with warm water and soap.
• Purchasing soy products supports the soy farmers of America, which stimulates our economy and lessens dependence on international resources.

PARAFFIN

• Derived from petroleum, a limited resource
• The burning of paraffin wax contributes to indoor air contamination by emitting petro-chemicals causing soot deposits and carcinogenic particulate matter.
• This wax contains petroleum by-products and additives that inhibit biodegradability.
• Paraffin wax residue is quite troublesome, often impossible, to remove.
• Purchasing paraffin products not only supports our dependence on this crude oil but also supports an industry riddled with environmental faux pas.

So back to the store with my Paraffin Candle and receipt in hand to return my candle, and start the search again, this time for a soy candles at a reasonable price . . . I was the Goldilocks of Soy Candles for about a week straight. One smelt great but was too expensive, one was cheap but smelled awful, until finally a reasonably priced soy candle that smelt great, and I found it at HOMESENSE (Homegoods in the US) aaaahhhhhh . . . just right.

Therepe Fresh        Sunwashed Linen! It smells lovely, not too much scent but just enough. And it burns evenly there is nothing I hate more than a candle that burns a hole straight down leaving walls of un-burnt candles wax . . . what a waste. But this one burnt all the wax up!

And remember that expensive but amazing smelling Soy Candle . . . it's from KISS MY FACE and it smells so amazing I could eat it. It is a bit pricey at $15 a candle. But still, I could smell it for dinner, seriously no dinner just candle smell! :)

If anyone has any suggestions on where to find well priced soy candles I'm all ears!! Share the smelly savings!! :)

Meal Plan Monday: Sticky Pork

THIS IS YUMMY!!
Lee asked me what I was going to post today, and I said STICKY PORK recipe, and he said "OOOOooooo . . . . Can we have that for dinner tonight, that was really good"

It's delicious over Broccolini, but it's also great as a Lettuce wrap :) We've done both their equally good!

1 tbsp Oil (peanut or vegetable)
300gr Ground Pork
3-5 cloves garlic (depending on your tastes)
1/2 cup fried shallots, sliced
1-4 thai red chilies, sliced (depending on your taste)
1 tbsp Lime Juice
1/2 tsp brown sugar
2-4 tbsp hoisin sauce (we call it asian ketchup here, you can find it in any Asian food store, or the asian isle at the grocery store)
2 tsp soy sauce

1) Pour Oil in pan, fry shallots, hot peppers and garlic until crispy. Remove from pan.
2) Add  a bit more oil to the pan, fry up ground pork, when almost cooked add the remaining ingredients (brown sugar, lime juice, soy sauce and hoisin sauce, fried shallots, garlic and hot peppers from step 1).
3) Serve over steamed broccolini, or rinse some iceberg lettuce, and put some of the pork mixture inside and serve like a lettuce taco! YUM!!!

Flowers on Friday: Beauty and the Beast Rose??

Anytime there is a single rose in a bud vase, all I hear in my head is
"Tale as old as Time, Song as old as rhyme . . . "
A single rose screams Beauty and the Beast to me! And when it whilts and we have to throw it away it kind of makes me a little sad, like the beast never found True Love.

That was my long winded way of saying, this weeks flowers on friday is a single red rose in a bud vase.
I LOVE a little arrangement in the powder room, it's almost a guarentee that your guest will have to visit the powder room at some point so it's nice to give them something pretty to look at and smell!

Backyard Harvest and Fall Lawn Care

Here in BC we've had a super HOT September which is a welcomed change from our COLD summer.
Yesterday we pulled up some of our beet crop! Nothing too crazy, this is only about 1/4 of them, I'm hoping this warm weather holds out for a few more weeks, so we can get the fence stained and the beets harvested!

We've been caring for our lawn organically since the day we moved in, with little paws running around the lawn we wanted to make sure it's nice and safe.

So now that fall is here, we need to get on our organic fall lawn care before we blink and it's Winter.

This fall we are:

• Sowing  grass seed. It doesn’t matter how good or bad your lawn is, if you apply grass seed, the lawn will thicken up. And a thick lawn prevents weeds from germinating. Fall is the perfect time to top dress your lawn with seed. You'll need about 2lbs for every 1000 sq ft.
• Making Compost tea from our Compost Bin and spraying it on the lawn about 1 week after we seed.
• Keep mowing the lawn as long as it's  growing, but cut it LONGER than usual. Cool season grasses like to be a bit longer than normal.
• Rake leaves, or better yet, run them over with the lawn mower to mulch them and let them decompose in to the grass.
• If your lawn isn't preforming well, get the soil tested, and adjust from there. Fall is a good time to fix your soil issues.
• No Fast Food: If your going to fertilize your lawn make it a slow release.
• And don't forget to De-Thatch your lawn so the seeds and food can get to the soil!

This week we'll be "harvesting" the rest of our vegetable beds, and hopefully finishing off what has now become the bain of my existance . . . staining the fence.

Front Door!

Just a quickie today, Lee's home from work so we'll be work'in on some projects, maybe a trip to Ikea ? ? :)
I was thinking . . . we've shown you the front door from the outside, but we've never shared the front door from the inside? Probably because it's not very exciting :) but I know that when I follow blogs I like the BIG PICTURE, all the different angles and shots.
So here it is . . . (drum roll please) . . . The Back of our Front Door! TA DA

Flowers on Friday: Pot Scrubber

If you caught our Homemade cleaners post yesterday you might have already seen today's flowers, it's our flowery pot scrubber.
With kitchen sponges being so expensive I thought I would try my hand at making my own. And as long as I'm making them, I might as well make it super cute too.

I used this tutorial on how to crochet flowers:

I made four flowers in different sizes, sewed them all together and I was left with an adorable pot scrubber.

I used leftover scraps of yarn, so it was free :)

Homemade Cleaners: Green Cleaning Recipes

Since we started making our own Laundry Soap it only seemed natural to start making our own cleaners too. Not only for the natural aspect of it, but for the savings. Homemade cleaners can be up to 95% cheaper than store bought cleaners. Savings also come from getting the best efficiency from your appliances, you must keep them clean and in good working order. 

When we moved last October I picked up some of Martha Stewart's cleaners. They worked great but at over $5 a bottle I thought I could do better. Now we make our own and funnel it into Martha's Spray Bottles because they are the perfect shape, they are tall and slim and take up very little space.

Homemade Cleaning Supplies:

• Vinegar
• Hydrogen Peroxide
• Rubbing Alcohol
• Baking Soda
• Borax
• Washing Soda
• Castile Soap (Dr.Brommers)
• Dish Soap
• WATER
• Citrus
• Olive Oil
• Tea Tree Oil

The Manor's All Purpose Cleaner:
1/2 cup Warm Water
1/2 cup Vinegar
2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
15 drops Tea Tree Oil
The Tea Tree oil makes this cleaner a germicide, fungicide and anti bacterial. It's great for wiping down counters, and is especially useful during the cold and flu season, I squirt a cloth with it, then go around the house wiping down door knobs and light switches.
or
1 tsp Borax
2 Tbsp Vinegar
1/2 tsp Washing Soda
1/2 tsp Castile Soap
20 drops Tea Tree Oil
2 Cups Hot Water
We've used both recipes, I just like the top one because it's easier to make. I like this second recipe for cleaning shelves in the fridge or dirty sinks, anything in need a little more power (I sound like Tim Allen, "More Power")

Grease Cutter:
2 Cups warm water
1/4 Cup Castile Soap (we use Dr.Brommers)
10 Drops essential oil, we use Lemon
Mix together in a spray bottle and spray on surface, let sit for a few seconds then wipe off with a damp sponge.

Garbage Disposal Deodorizer:
After we use a lemon we cut it into strips, then cut the pulp out, and throw it down the garborator, with a sprinkle of baking soda and a dash of vinegar, works like a charm!

Microwave Cleaner: (you've probably heard this one before but it works amazingly well)
A bowl of warm water, with lemon slices. Put the bowl in the microwave and cook it for 1 minute. After it's done 'cooking' Let it sit in the microwave for 3 more minutes, then wipe it out with a damp sponge, the steam makes it so easy to clean!!

Toilet Bowl Cleaner:
1 Cup Borax
1/4 Cup Vinegar
Mix together in a cup then pour into toilet. Let sit for 15 min, then scrub. Works great, I've also used plain old liquid dish detergent and it worked fine too, the borax give you a bit more scrubbing power!

Window Cleaner:
I haven't been able to find a glass cleaner that works as well as commercial glass cleaners, so I still buy my glass cleaner. I usually buy Seventh Generation (I still decant it into the Martha Stewart Cleaner bottles).
For the outside of windows, about 3 times a year we mix up a batch of
2 cups Water
3 Tbsp Vinegar
1/2 tsp Liquid Dish Detergent
Mix it all together in a bucket, use a sponge to scrub the windows, and hose off!

Carpet Stain Remover:
First try to get as much up as possible, and any "chunks"
Next, sprinkle corn starch or baking soda on the spot to absorb some of the stain
Combine 1Tbsp Clear Dish washing Liquid, with 2 tbsps Vinegar, add 2 cups warm water, and blot stain. It's simple but it works just as well as any store bought carpet cleaner!

Carpet Re-Fresher:
About once a month, I sprinkle baking soda all over the carpet, leave it for about 30 minutes then vacuum it up. It pulls out any smells, and leaves the carpet nice and fresh!

Among other reasons for not using Commercial Air Fresheners, they are full of phthalates, chemicals that manufacturers use as plastic softeners and to hold fragrances. California and Washington have banned the sale of children's toys containing phthalates because of their link to hormonal disruptions in additional studies on animals. Which raises concerns for me over why phthalates weren't banned from air fresheners too??? Solid Air Fresheners contain pollutants that can damage the lungs is inhaled in higher concentrations, and if ingested by children or pets, they can be poisonous and even fatal.

Homemade Room Spray:
3/4 cup Filtered Water
2/3 cup either rubbing alcohol or vodka (use the cheap stuff :)
15 drops scented oil (we use lavender) (or Vanilla)
12 drops complimenting scented oil (grapefruit is good) (or Orange extract)
Shake it all together in a spray bottle (a plant mister works even better).

Cleaning with natural solutions keeps your homes connection to nature, just like we resonate with natural materials when we decorate, it's the same idea when we clean with natural solutions, it just feels right, and good! There's a reason we don't feel cozy and warm at the public pool . . . too many chemicals (and old men in speedos hehe)

My Towel Philosophy!

I'm working on our Homemade Cleaners Post! It's almost ready :) It'll be up tomorrow!

In the meantime, I thought I'd share my philosophy on towels. Only a Housewife would have a philosophy on towels (or this housewife does anyways).
We use to have multiple colors of towels, yellow, green, blue, turq. Some with decorative trim, some with fancy stitching, none of them matching.
And since it's not good to wash towels with clothes (all the shedding fluff) I was having to wash small little loads of towels at a time, until I gave up and started washing all the towels together regardless of color and trim, a melting pot of towels as it were.
Pretty soon, i.e. after one wash, the colors all bled into each other and the dark towels ended up covered in white fluff, and the light towels ended up tie dyed.
After living with the consequences of my actions for a week I cut everyone up (rags for Lee in the garage) and bought all new towels, WHITE towels!
Now I can throw all the bath towels, face cloths, and hand towels, from every bathroom together in one load. I wash them in HOT water and even add a touch of bleach once or twice a year, worry free.

(Ignore the iron in the picture, I don't iron my towels, that's crazy!!!)

It sounds like a lot of thought for something as simple as towels, but it's the little things that make HUGE differences in our day to day life and washing towels was one of those things that was driving me crazy! It's been a full two years since I went on a towel chopping rampage and I've never looked back. Having all white towels has made laundry day a lot easier.
And there's something so serene about a bathroom full of freshly washed, and folded white towels.

The Towels we use around The Manor are the $2+ towels from Walmart. You know the super cheap $2 towels on their stands, those are our towels. Don't let their scratchy exterior fool you, once you get them home and in the wash with a little vinegar as a fabric softener, they are the Perfect towel!
Not too big, not too small, not too soft, not too hard, just right. That's right I'm the goldilocks of towels :)
I don't like big bath towels because I can't wrap one around my hair, and if you do get it to stay it's super heavy and hurts your neck!
I also can't stand big squishy towels that don't absorb anthing, and just push water around while you try to dry off.
If you sound like me Buy one, give it a try, if you hate it your only out $2. But I think you'll like 'em!

And that's my Towel Philosophy! All White makes for easy laundry!

Recipe Box!

The Library is my favorite place in the whole wide world. Out here in the suburbs we have a small little library, but I can still remember taking long lunches at the Vancouver Library, the third largest library in Canada. While my reading material has changed slightly since my single days living downtown (less fashion, more home), I still check out armfuls of Cookbooks from the library every month!

I like to try at least one new recipe every week. Not every recipe is a winner, but when I find one that is I needed somewhere to keep it. The obvious choice was a recipe box. I found one at Michaels for $5 with a 40% off coupon it only cost me $3. It was exactly what I was looking for, but when I got it home . . . it looked a little . . .  old fashioned.

So first I removed the little gold clasp, then I removed the top, filled the holes in with wood filler and painted it. I used some left over paint from the Townhouse Mudroom, Martha Stewart's Bay Leaf Green.
And after adding a little name plate it was exactly what I was looking for!

Total Cost:

Green Paint Free (leftover from Mudroom)
Wood Filler Free (leftover from our old Dining Table)

I still need section dividers but I plan on using some old scrapbook paper for those!

So we now have a recipe box, and our cork tiles to store our recipes, where do you store yours? I'm hoping to find some online reasources for storing recipes, but first I'll need a kitchen computer system ;) wink wink Lee :)

Flowers on Friday: Roses

I missed yesterday's post, I have what can only be known as the WORST COLD ever. Me . . . over exaggerating . . . never ;)
Lee brought roses home, along with a gallon of orange juice and some cold fx :) I'm starting to feel better already, maybe it's the orange juice but I prefer to think it's the roses.

I LOVE using a round vase for roses. I wish I could give you a well thought out answer as to why . . . but I can't, I just think they look great in a round vase.
Anyone have a favorite shaped vase??
