    Barn Door Research

We spent all summer looking for old salvaged door that we could turn into a barn door. I survived a rat sighting, a moth attack, walking into the world's biggest spider web (and instantly becoming a karate master) and a very pushy salesmen who thought he could push me into buying a door that was too small (seriously . . . I can't negotiate my door size).

Here's the door we want to replace. It's a great door but we can't close with out moving the dining room chairs out of the way first, and because it separates the laundry room from the main living area it's really important that it closes.
Lee's decided that because we've had NO luck finding a door . . . he would make one! As well as make the hardware for it too In case you were wondering HOW, Lee can weld and is very skilled at metal work. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, he's a keeper :)

Here's some of our barn door inspiration:

Here's the one we're thinking we'll base the design around it, but I'm thinking in Green, Martha Stewart's Beach Grass Green :)

Today we're headed out to The Po (That's what we call The Home Depot, I have no idea why??) to gather supplies, and I've baked a Pie for our neighbor, a thank you for borrowing his table saw, so we're about half way there ;)

I love barn doors. I can't wait to see what your door looks like when you are done. I have a question about your chair covers. How do you keep them in place when you sit? I have covers on my chairs and after we sit in them, I have to pushe the fabric back in the crease at the back of the chair. They don't seem to want to stay in place.

I have read so much about barn doors recently that I want one, too. Yesterday I was in our DIY store, but they did not have the hardware that youneed, and MY husband cannot make it. (Lucky you!) But I found out the name of a company that produces the hardware and will find out where to get it. Our house is brandnew, but we had it build to look like an older farmhouse so a barn door is a perfect addition... Can't wait to see how you build the door, I have been looking for used old doors as well, but none would have the correct size...
So I also thought about making one by myself.
      Bye,
      Jule

Do you have an ace hardware in canada? We found our hardware cheapest there and it shipped free right to the store. I think total was about 125 but we needed a 12 foot rail since we have two doors. The shorter rails are cheaper. We thought about having some welded but this ended up much cheaper. Then I sprayed them oil rubbed bronze so that they weren't super shiny. I just posted a sneak peek at mine on my blog. Www.mrssouthernbelle.blogspot.com can't wait to see yours!!

I like the look of barn doors. It's a shame that the builders didn't realize that the door couldn't be open and shut when dining room furniture was in place. Then they could have done a pocket door for that doorway.

My Husband made a barn door and hardware for our laundry room as well. I didn't do a post about it - it was pre-blog life, but you can see it on Flickr.

Our door was free, found in a dumpster, and I painted all the hardware black after taking the photos.
      Here's the Laundry room.

Can't wait to see it! The doorway to my laundry/utility room is extremely narrow - less than 2 feet. I can't put in a regular door because there's no room for it to open. The previous owners had a hideous accordion door. I replaced it with a curtain but would like something a little more solid. I think this is the perfect solution. My hubby will be thrilled! ;-)

I am sure that your barn door will be fantastic, like everything else. Your home is lovely. The door with the windows at the top is nice if you have light that comes though from your laundry room. Will you be having a dash of colour on your new barn door?
