    Cutlery Tray for Jewelry!

I LOVE Jewelry, real jewelry, costume jewelry, all of it . . . almost as much as I love shoes!

I have a small jewelry box for my "real" jewelry. As much as I'd love to fill a wall with gold and diamond jewelry, we can't afford that :( so as far as my real items go, I only own the classics. A small pair of diamond studs, a pair of peal earrings, a pearl necklace, a cocktail ring, a couple of white gold bands, and of coarse my wedding band and engagement ring!!

But it wasn't my "good" jewelry I was having a hard time storing, it was my costume jewelry I couldn't make room for! There's nothing I love more than a great long necklace to complete a look but, what I had was a tangled mess of chains and beads.

So while at walmart, I found some bamboo cutlery trays for $10 each! I grabbed 3!! Along with a pack of rubber coated hooks, and a can of white spray paint!
    First:
My dad sprayed each of the trays white for me, while Lee worked on his car, kind of a work share program those two have going on :). It took 2 coats each, adding up to almost 2 cans of spray paint!

    Second:
I decided on what jewelry I wanted where and Lee started screwing in the hooks, which immediately cracked the back panel. Bamboo is a very hard wood so it won't expand to accommodate the size of the hook's screw. So he had to drill pilot holes before screwing the hooks in . . . a bit more trouble but it worked!

    Last:
We screwed the tray to the wall using an anchor and a screw (super simple).

I organized my jewelry by color, and style. I seem to have a lot of black jewelry so it all got grouped together.

Then I stored my brighter more colorful jewelry together,

and then my earth tone jewelry together.

I also have a few LONG necklaces so we installed some hooks off the bottom to hang them!!!

    Total Cost:
$10 each for cutlery trays $30
1 can of spray paint (I had a leftover can in the garage already) $5
2 boxes of rubber coated hooks $3 each       $6

p.s. Sorry I could snap a better far away shot . . . it was very cramped in my little walk-in :)

I was just brainstorming for a new way to display my jewelry...What a clever idea! I know having my jewelry out where I can see it will encourage me to better use those pieces that get lost in the jumble of a jewelry box.

I did something similar several years back but basically just screwed my hooks into the wall next to the medicine cabinet above/beside my vanity. Since my vanity area is in the little hall between the master bedroom and the bathroom and part of my dressing area, it's perfect.

I love your idea with the cutlery trays, though...and color coordinating? Genius!

What a neat idea. I might have to try this with some modifications. I wear a lot of stud earrings or smaller bits that I'd want to store too. But I just realized how many necklaces I have. If they were easier to grab and go (and not have to untangle) I would TOTALLY wear more varied stuff than the same old earring set every day. Awesome inspirtation!

I have a negative comment to put before you all !!!!

If you have thieves in your home, they can steal ALL your jewelry, and leave you with just the patch on the wall where the boxes used to be !!!!

Better to have items in many places, not just one spot, as that way only a small amount of baubles can be stolen !!!!

Even if it is just costume jewellery, it has a value to someone else - possibly to pay for drugs!

I agree I wouldn't hang the expensive stuff on a wall, but for costume this is a great idea. It's not worth all the trouble to hide it in multiple places, if they want it they'll find it...take it from someone who has been burglarized!

What a clever idea! Didn't the cup screw hooks cracked the plastic? I know it would be more expensive but won't the Command product hooks do the same thing; leaving no holes and they can be removed if necessary without making holes in your trays or walls. Just my two cents worth! I quickly read this so I will go back over it again to see if I missed any details.

OMG! I have seen some super cool DIY jewelry holders. But it think this takes the cake. Not only is it creative but it is functional. I wanted to see if i could find an idea that would allow me to store my jewelry in my walk in closet somehow and I think this may fit the bill. It could even work behind a door. But its so simple in elegant that it can be made visible. WOW Awesome!!

A friend's hsuband made me one of the best jewelry storage containers I've ever had. He built a box using latice strips for the four sides, and a piece of particle board for the back. This was about 12x16 but could be any size you need. He then built a frame about an inch larger in both directions for the front, and attached it to one side of the box with hinges. Mirror was added to the frame and small gold hooks were screwed into the top of the box for necklaces to hang. We simply used a couple of screws to attach it to the wall. A fancy picture frame could be used instead of making your own frame for the mirror. The jewelry box can be stained or painted to match your decor. This method keeps the dust off your jewelry, and looks like a pretty framed mirror, not a jewelry box.

I love your jewelry pieces I think they are all fun and unique and wish you the best. I don’t wear much jewelry but I like it very cool and geometric. Great color too.

Just saw this on Pinterest - genius!!! - and told my husband I need this. I have the exact space in my closet for it. All my costume jewelry is in ziplocs stuffed in my dresser, and I usually forget about half the things I have. Would love to be able to see them all in my closet where the clothes are! Thanks for the idea. And from all the other comments about how great your blog is - I'm your newest follower.

What a great idea! I've been looking for an armoire, but this is even better, because you can expand as needed. Sending my husband out right now!!

You, my dear, are brilliant!!! There isn't much out there for necklaces and chunky bracelets except those tall acrylic holders, flat trays and chunky boxes that take up a huge amount of space. I think if you were to glue felt on these you could market them.& You can cover them with material on the outside. Maybe you can even come up with a door or some sort of cover for them? Either way, this idea is pure genius!!!
& I hope we all can live burglary free. Its' a big fear for me as well. I have locks all through out my home and I lock everything up before I go out. I hate it, but hey, this is New York.

I Bought mine from Walmart! They were $9.95 each! They were originally Bamboo colored and we sprayed them White.
        Hope that helps

This is a really unique and quite adorable idea!! I've seen tons of suggestions for jewelry storage, but I've never seen a vertical display like you have set up here. It's cool that you can organize by color, like you have it set up, too. This is more of a good solution for people who own their homes and intend to stay for a while, simply because you have the trays directly affixed to the wall, but you could probably screw them down to a piece of plywood, and hang that like a picture frame, to avoid holes you don't really need. This is a fantastic idea, I can't wait to organize my jewelry this weekend, thanks for the inspiration!

I just got the supplies to do this, but the screw length on the hooks is too long. We're you able to find hooks that were short enough to no show when you screwed them from the bottom? How did you handle that? Thank you!

I've been looking for a way to store my costume jewelry for ages and haven't liked the DIY ideas I've seen - until today!I know this is going in my closet, only I'll double it since I inherited my mom's jewelry (mostly cute, good quality costume) and I'll put a full length mirror between the two. LOVE this!!!

She mentioned in her post that she got the 3 bamboo trays at Walmart for $10 each [$30], along with the can of spray paint for $5 and the rubber coated hooks for $3 each [she bought 2 pkgs], total $6. $41 for entire project. This is a really good way to hang & organize costume jewelry.

I love your idea better than mine. I use mug hooks and hang my necklaces and bracelets on the post, I close them up some so they aren't spread across my small space in the closet.
