Because we live in a townhouse I've learned some important elements to Container Gardening.
1) PACK IT- I don't know if this is what my green thumbed friends would say, but It's what works best for me.
2) I love the cascading plants, and in my experience petunias don't cascade well, every time. But potato vines, now those cascade every time!
3) Fertilizer-We all like food! Plants are no different :) We use Miracle Gro's Shake 'n Feed, you Shake it in and it Feeds your plants for 3 months.
4) SUN- lots of sun! Although this depends on the type of plants in your container, but I tend to pick sun loving plants, and therefore Sun is important element number 4.
5) Drainage- either have holes in the bottom of your container or put rocks in before you put the dirt and plants in.
If anyone has anything to add to the list please comment away!!! I don't have a black thumb, but it's certainly not green yet.
And since we are the Malineks From the Maillardville Manor it's only fitting that we would have a monogrammed door mat with a great big "M" on it.
Hope everyone had a great labor day weekend, and make sure to check back with us, all week we'll be "Getting Ready for Fall".
It feels like fall in NC today....ahhh!! Love your entrance...so inviting!
ReplyDeleteI love the monogrammed entry mat and greenery is always so welcoming. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteCooler temps here in Atlanta as well. A welcome reprieve from the 95+ degree heat we have been experiencing all summer. The pot is gorgeous, love the trailing potato vine.
ReplyDeleteI always "pack" my plants too...probably not the best practice but with annuals you can afford to be a little more haphazard if you'd like.
ReplyDeleteYour container looks great!
Hi, I'm Amy and I found you through the Blogging Your Way class. I love your sense of style and all the posts about organisation - I'll have to go through and read them all!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!!! I thought I'd better show it off while it was still here!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Info Garden Grunt I'll definitely remember that for next summer, don't pack perennials, but annuals are okay!! (within reason)
thanks
Oh and I've received a couple emails asking if I made the Front Mat, alas I did not, I bought it from Bed Bath and Beyond for $10, and yes they had every initial not just M's
haha
Your entry way looks so welcoming! Your container pot is so pretty. So healthy and green and I love overflowing baskets and pots. You do have a green thumb!
ReplyDeleteI love your pinkish front door and the plant is so welcoming and the mat is superb. Love it all.
ReplyDeleteYou girls are preparing for falling leaves and cooler weather while here in Brisbane we are getting ready for a very quick spring before sweltering sub-tropical heat is part of our daily life!
xx
Allison: Thanks, I also love baskets with overhanging plants, it took me a lot of trial and error to find one that trailed like the potato vines do :) The good part about a blog is I don't have to show the bad :) haha
ReplyDeleteAnne-Marie- I forgot Australia is the opposite, Wow, christmas in the sun :) Cook Thanks so much for your lovely comment :) After this week we'll be back to regular (non-getting ready for fall posts).
Oooh love your planter! Just a little tip about potato vines, I've used them for years, in planters and window boxes and hanging baskets....if you go in to the vine and clip, or "thin" it out, it looks wonderful. Still keep it long and trailing, just thin it a bit and you get to see the lovely pot that it is being covered by the massive (and) overtaking potato vine. Just a thought :). I tried it one year and loved it and have continued doing it!
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean to imply that your potato vine is massive and overtaking...it's not, it's lovely. It's just a thought because I've worked with it for years.
ReplyDeleteI love the tip!!!! I was always so afraid to touch it in case I killed it. But will definitely try thinning it out. I'll let you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry He is a bit massive,
the second comment made me giggle :) I love any tips I can get!!!
Thanks
Oh, in response to your response....don't worry about thinning at all. I think I probably would do it like every two or three weeks throughout the summer. It literally fills in within days if you don't like it. Although now, at least here in Minnesota, it's become more chilly and I think all "major" growth has stopped. Everything is just kind of standing still now. Definitely try next summer :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit to your blog...love the potatow vine, a really pretty arrangement!
ReplyDeleteYour planter is wonderful-plants always add a lot & it is fun to change them up with the seasons.
ReplyDeleteFirst time visitor, here through Kristin's party. I love potato vine, I buy it every year for my flower boxes and urn planter. Nice entryway.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!!! I love potato vines they are always willing to work for you! Petunias on the other hand can have a mind of their own haha
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the lovely comments! :)
