Saving Money one TV at a time

Last week we were watching TV . . . and POP!!!!
    Then everything went dark:
We turned it off then on . . . we waited 10 minutes then tried again . . . nothing. Near the end I thought I caught Lee giving the TV a little smack on the top . . . old school style! haha

We were super disappointed that we would have to spend some of our savings on a new TV. Lee likes buying new electronics as much as the next man but replacing the TV wasn't something he was excited about either.

Lee is in the Electrical Engineering field and is very comfortable around electronics of all kinds, from small circuit boards to giant industrial machinery panels. While he hadn't fixed a TV before he figured what's the harm in trying . . . it's already broken after all.

Lee did a little research on the internet, typed in the make and model of our TV and was just hoping to find someone else who had the same POP we did. The only lead he really got was that it could be a capacitor (the red arrow is pointing to it on the photo). Lee picked up a capacitor from a local electronics store for $10. Pulled out the panel (which I thought was really cool), took out the old capacitor and soldered in the new one.
He put the TV back together and we waited to see if it would turn on . . . neither of us expected it to work, in fact I was flipping through a Best Buy flyer while he plugged the TV in. Then as fast as the TV popped off . . . it popped back on!
I am super proud of Lee, not only did he fix it, but he completely resisted the urge to replace our TV with a bigger, better, newer model . . . it's like the girl equivalent of walking away from an amazing pair of high heels in a store, that you actually need and could totally justify buying!

And as usual what's good for our pocket book is good for the environment. We saved some cash and kept our TV out of the landfill.

Have a great weekend, we'll see you back here Monday Morning for a BIG announcement! BIG!

** While we were able to open our TV, fix the problem, put it back together and remain electrocution free . . . we make no guarantees that you will. Please proceed with caution and if you aren't comfortable consult a professional.

Wow, great work!! I read capacitor and laughed thinking it sounded a bit like Back to the Future's flux capacitor :)

p.s. did you know you have word verification turned on your comments?

        Hi Samantha!
That's funny . . . Back to the Future is Lee's favorite movie! haha

And yes we had to turn word verification on because we were getting too much spam. Once the spam calms down we'll disable it again!!!
Thanks for your patience when commenting!! :)

I was thinking of the flux capacitor too!! LOL It is one of our favorite movies as well. So glad he was able to fix the tv. Nice to keep things out of the landfill. Just wish things were made better to last longer than they do because things are not made like they used to be.

The same thing happened to us...right down to the smack on the TV. After a little googling we found out that Samsung TVs had a recall. They sent over a guy to fix the capacitor within 48 hrs. I think my hubby was a little disappointed that he couldn't get a new tv.

Ha! How cool is that? Good for you guys! And congrats for having such a handy man at home. I'm glad you guys didn't have to pay an unexpected amount of money to replace the TV. Isn't that cool when you can rely on your husband to do something at home that works out? And you don't have to pay for someone else to do it. That's one of the things I like from my hubby.

Nice. Have a wonderful weekend ;)

We had that happen too, and like someone else commented it was a quality problem with Samsung at the time. Fixed, no worries. We actually had an engineer from Phillips come out to our home once due to an issue with one of their tvs. They were looking at various ones in different locations trying to resolve an issue.

Can't wait for the BIG news ( I am hoping it is what I am thinking it is ;-) But, then again, with you two I never know! LOL

I'm guessing you have a Samsung...

We had to pay $500 to have ours fixed, and nearly had to take the repairman to court to get ours back (he turned out to be super shady, but that's a whole other story...).

You're so lucky Lee is handy!

Wow you don't hear of many being able to fix a TV these days. Things are unfortunately all throw away. That is great that a repair was possible! So great that you tried to fix it!

I love handy husbands! My engineer husband fixed the lock on my mini van door. He found a you tube video that told him how to do it and took the whole door apart and fixed the mechanism inside. Sometimes it's the little things!
