Library Bookcase: No one got Squished!

One day overdue but it's done.
This was one of those projects that was worth every drop of sweat and every penny spent. The impact is HUGE (and so is the bookcase).

It wasn't without it's trials and small hiccups:
    • After hanging the upper cases the lower case looked way too small so we added the wood top. A mere $26 upgrade and I think it makes all the difference.
    • The fact that our ladder was a little too small and Lee had to stand on the TOP step, 12 feet in the air to fasten and paint the top. That was a little, let's just call it a hiccup (a big dangerous hiccup).  But don't worry I stood under him the whole time, steadying the ladder, ready to catch my 6 foot 8 inch tall, 250 lb husband in case he fell. You know . . . so we'll both be seriously injured.
    • And lastly, after the thick wood top was attached it started to come up at the front because we couldn't screw down that close to the edge, so some extra glue and a couple clamps later and it was fixed.
Nothing too major, Lee stayed on the ladder and I remained my un-squished self. It's probably my best quality . . . not being squished!

But after all the sanding and painting was done we both couldn't be happier with the result. So without further ado:
The top of the wall cabinets is about 15 feet in the air. I have never been a big fan of double height ceilings. I really like seeing exposed rafters and other architectural details but a big empty space above has never appealed to me. If only someone had shown me 15 feet of bookcase!

    Wallet Damage:
$26 for 2  2"x12" pieces of framing lumber.
$234 for Upper Kitchen cabinets without doors, from Ikea.
$18  Chair Rail as Crown around the top ($1.56 a foot x 11 feet) Here's a how to: Link.
    $10  Piece of 1/4" MDF (4 foot x 4 foot)
$5 Tester pot of paint to match cabinets (Martha Stewart's Talc).
    ______________________________________
Total Cost:  $293 + some extras like leftover stain, glue, screws and finishing nails.

For around $300 dollars that's a lot of added impact!!  But remember if you don't already have lower bookcases that cost will almost double.

And of course we can't call this a reveal because we still have a rolling ladder to fabricate and install! It should add another $100 or so to our budget, but millions of dollars of impact!!!!

We are so close I can almost hear the music:
    "Tale as old as time,
    Song as old as rhyme"
Oh how I LOVE the bookcase from Beauty and the Beast. Lee doesn't like the beauty and the beast reference . . . maybe because it would make him the beast ? ? ? I however and totally ok with the reference! ;) haha

      It looks great!

My partner is also 6 foot 8 and whenever he does something slightly dangerous, I too stand guard imagining I can catch him... It's silly but makes me feel better to be nearby!

I can't help but chuckle at Lee not liking the Beauty and the Beast reference. (I too like all the books in the movie. ;) ) Your bookcase looks fabulous! My DH did fall off a ladder at his father's house. An 8 ft ladder standing on the top to reach the gutters to clean them out. He is very lucky he is ok.

Further explanation.. he was at his dad's house by himself. I won't let me do that again. He stopped over on his way home from work. Usually someone is there.

Congrats! You guys worked hard on this and it's an improvement over the blank wall for sure. Just my unsolicited two cents...I'm not sure you're done yet. I would consider adding column book cases on each side of the window connecting the two and making the upper look supported. It looks a little disturbing to my eye up there. It's huge and heavy-looking (I know it is in reality, but visually too) and it makes me scared to stand over there no matter how well it is put up. Bad feng shui or something. I know the column bookcases would be pretty narrow, maybe just columns would be fine, but I think bookcases would look pretty natural.

Ashli, well done! Love the new look. What a great project. Now, can you please share your secret for hiding computer cords?? I'm dying to know. I'm about to embark on a spare bedroom turned office project and want to float the desk in the room, but am wondering how to hide the iMac cords.

Putting on the dark wood top really makes a big impact. I currently use an ikea china cabinet as book storage. I'd love a space like this. In the next house, big kitchen, and book storage; that's all that matters!

Oh I am so jealous! We want to build/install bookcases (also using Ikea cabinets) in the 12 foot niches flanking our fireplace. I am DYING to get that done as our books are in boxes filling up half our garage and tucked anywhere we can find a place, (like 2 of my dresser drawers!) Can't wait to see and get some tips for the ladder!!

I agree with My Boys' I think columns attaching the two visually would make it look less like its sitting on top of the windows.
But I love all the extra book storage. You have a beautiful home!

I've been waiting for this, and it is not a let down! You are so good at getting enormous bang for the buck. I also have to say, however, that I think the addition of a couple of columns would REALLY create a truly built-in (upper and lower cases connected) look that would be the icing on the cake .. and after haning those cabinets way up there so beautifully, well, surely a couple of columns would be easy peasy?

Looks really great!! I have a lot of experience myself with the 'under-the-ladder-standing'. How about adding some small scale columns between the upper and the lower bookshelf? It would connect the whole thing and it looks like it could easily be done.

I agree with a few of the others. It needs some columns, etc to soften the look. However, to be completely honest and standing the chance of being banished, I really don't like it at all. In my opinion, it doesn't fit the size of the room or the style of the house. Even the desk is small. You had everything just perfect in the beginning when it was a small library with comfortable looking chairs which made the room warm and inviting.
At Christmas time the room took on a different look with the elegant tree which was beautiful and again inviting. The other rooms in the house look like they belong. Everything fits to scale and looks like it belongs in this home. Just my opinion.

I agree with Jane. Although, you have styled nicely, the scale of it is too big for the space & it looks odd in the room. Sometimes it's better to just leave things alone. You have made quite a few changes to this room, but it was actually really nice before and I think it looked better before your changes.

Wow – as a fellow book collector I can see how something like this would be a dream come true. The ladder will be a great addition (and something that on its own will visually unify the top and bottom cases). From your earlier photos I can tell the wall goes much higher than the top cases, so I can see you wanting something tall to fill out the wall a bit. I love it, but the most important thing is that YOU love it!

Love your library.....just a thought though.....it looks like a bookcase sitting on top of the window.....what if you trimmed a 1x6 straight down beside the window from the upper bookcase to the bottom bookcase woodtop and painted everything white....(paint out the gray between the 1x6 and the window). I think it would give a wonderful cohesive look..... otherwise just love your concept of a library.... cant wait to see your ladder!

I was wondering where you got your desk in the library.. I want something like this for my bedroom if it is not too big. What are the length & width?? I am also considering a simple console/sofa table, maybe distressed or urban chic. I am slowly turning my bedroom into a french country/greek villa feel.. not exactly sure how it will turn out but will give me a project to keep me busy for an indefinite time.. Thank you for your emails & web site.. loving nearly all your ideas.. hope to be able to incorporate some of them.. at least those that dont require me to paint/hammer/screw or wallpaper..hahaha Carol
