    Don't have a cow.

    errrrr . . . I meant DO have a cow! ;)

I'm about to share with you the reason our big library project was delayed by 1 month (more on that at the end of the post). It's cute, it's brindle and it's lying on our living room floor . . . that's right, yet another living room rug.
(I also totally realize that it looks like I designed a room based on the color of my dog, but you'd be wrong, I picked the dog to match my room . . . just kidding.)

You've seen our first attempt at layering rugs, our second attempt with a red rug was nice but still didn't ring my bell. But I think we hit the nail on the head with this one, a cow hide rug!
It was always my plan to find a hide rug for the living room but I was convinced I couldn't find one in our price range, so I went ahead with plan B and picked out another rug. But Murphy (as in Murphy's Law) had other plans, not 2 months after we bought our new ikea rug I found this amazing hide at Homesense for $160!!!!! Seriously, an unheard of price.
I was still ready to walk away but with some coaxing from my mom I brought it home to "try out" and well the rest is history!
Seriously, Max looks like an accessory he matches so well! haha

A few new pillows, and the look is complete . . . for now ;).
I Hope you like it as much as we do! I think the moral of today's story is Cow hide rugs are awesome and never settle, wait it out for what you really want!

As for our BIG library project . . . I transferred the money we had set aside for the library to buy the hide so we had to wait another month to build up the "library project fund". We actually just started on it this weekend so check back later this week for an update!! All I'll say now is it's BIG (15 feet tall big!).

We would love to know what you think. Now that we've shared 3 different living room rugs, what do you think??? Cow hide, Red Rug, Brown Rug, or no layering of rugs at all???

that cow hide looks fabulous. I love the look of layered rugs, especially since it offers versitality to move them around when you want to see a cow in another room.

Love the new rug, and what a great price. It was meant for that room (or was the room meant for it?) Can't wait to see what you are "up" to in the library. My gut feelings is floor to ceiling shelving with a ladder!

Love the layered look, and I totally agree about waiting for exactly what you want! You'll always be looking if you don't! Max is super cute too, btw. :)

I like this one, but I also liked the red one! I also find it difficult to find the perfect thing for a certain room sometimes. What did you do with the other rugs? Did you put them into another room? Or resold them?

I really like the room....but maybe its more me but I think the room is too neutral. It needs some color. Maybe just pops of color?

Love the rug and cannot believe your luck in finding it! I surely would have snagged it myself it I had the chance! You are the first person whose blog I follow who has a two story living room just like me. I am a fan of your curtains, overall style and of course Max! We have two terriers too- a Westie and a Cairn. They like to clean thier little paws of my furniture so I cannot have white unless I want to constantly be washing. Questions- What color is your living room? Also, where did you get your curtains ( love the two tones) and where did you find a rod long enough to cover the windows at the top? I'm off to measure my windows now and see how they compare in size to yours? My email is mdaniel@consolidated.net. Kudos to your excellent score with that rug!

I love the layering of rugs! You do the cow hide thing so well, even though I love them I don't think I could ever make it work in our space! :/

Well...after looking back at all the ways you have had your rugs, I have to say my favorite is the brown patterned rug layered over the large rug. The pattern really adds some interest and brings out some more texture- which plays off of the variety to pillows you have. I'm not a huge fan of hide anything- I prefer my leather without the fur. Although the cow hide definitely adds some interest and a bit of !Wow! to your space.

The cow hide definitely grounds the space the best. Nothing was blah; the light brown was dull; the red was OK, but not you. The cow hide fits perfectly and was a great find!

i second that for the red rug. it perked up your living room for fall and maybe, christmas, but it didn't feel like "you". i love the cowhide. it's gorgeous, it's natural, and it's very chic.

I really like the red rug. Cow hide rugs just make me think of a dead cow.I do not have a problem with leather it is just the shape.

I love the look of the rug! How is Max reacting? Haha is he sniffing it all the time? My parents farm cows and my dogs go CRAZY around them. Maybe it's different since the cow is...um..asleep. :P

I actually think the room looks best with no layering of rugs at all...it looks so clean and beautiful that way, not too "busy". Cowhide rugs are definitely not for me...to me, the shape makes it look like it got squashed!

Personally, I prefer the room without layering the rugs. To me, the cowhide rug looks like you squashed a big cow in the middle of your living room. Your home is lovely, but I think you need to stop forcing the whole rug layering thing and just let the room 'be'.

Your living room is gorgeous! Maybe when my kids move out in 12 years :) I can have a coordinated and neat and clean living room.
I'm not a big fan of rugs on rugs, but the current one is probably my favorite.

i really like it with no layering, but that being said with a stain they are necessary. so if there has to be a rug it would definitely be the cowhide. i like the look of it the best, they are all gorgeous, but i luv the vibe of the cowhide. too bad you can't find a super mongo big 'cow hide' and have one rug, hehehe

I really like the no layering. The cow rug sort of looks like a dead animal on the floor. what about a oval rug that is a different texture? Like shaggy or very soft (fake) animal fur. (like the link below)

I am not a fan of the cowhide. The hide, the scale, and the shape just don't click for me. I think the red rug was nice or no layer at all. But, to each her own and if you feel all warm & fuzzy inside .... well, that's what enjoying your home is all about!

I I like the cowhide rug but I think I like the red rug best. It seems to add a bit of life to the room. Then again I love the Sarah Richardson Farmhouse mud room too. Maybe you could switch around for the seasons.
