"I like big Ferns and I cannot lie, You other ladies can't deny. When a fern grows in with an itty bitty waist and big leaves in your face, you get Sprung."
Seriously I love me a Big Old Fern in a pot! I actually think it should be against the law to have a covered porch without a fern or two under it (maybe that's a tad dramatic).
I also think Boston Ferns are the most economical of Summer planters, you can pick one up for $10 at Home Depot, plant it in a container and your done for the whole summer.
Boston Fern Care:
I've found the main key to growing BIG BIG ferns is WATER!!! They need so much water! Make sure your planter has adequate drainage and then water it once a day every day. On really hot summer days you might consider watering it twice a day!
I add a little compost to the top every now and again (maybe once a month) and they grow HUGE!
We recently had to add a wire trellis to the railing for our two Purple Clematis. I LOVE the huge purple flowers! I wanted to make sure they were supported but I didn't want a visible trellis, so we just attached some stainless steel wire (use stainless so it doesn't rust in the rain) to some eyelet hooks. Now we have an almost invisible trellis support system!
And lastly we added a copper Rain Chain! This one was made by Smith and Hawken, and is sold at Target for $40. Honestly I was hoping the little rain buckets went all the way down, but the Smith and Hawken version is broken up by lengths of chain. I still like it and for $40 it was by far the least expensive rain chain I've ever found.
Still lots to do on the front porch. We need to find cushions for our love seat and arm chairs. A planter full of purple flowers to tie into the clematis. And hopefully, a couple of planter boxes under the windows!!! :)
btw, I just finished organizing some of my crafty supplies in a new cabinet from Ikea! I can't wait to share tomorrow. I've spent most of this morning sitting in the guest room staring at my new craft cabinet!!

Finally, rapping! You should rap more often on posts. Good fun!
ReplyDeleteLooks great!!! I love ferns!! They give you a lot of bang for your buck. I remember a time years ago when Hurricane Andrew went through South Florida and we couldn't get ferns . . . .and I only live 3 hours away from there. All the ferns were being rerouted for a long time to Miami and neighboring cities as they started their rebuilding. I have found that if you can find the perfect spot for a fern, don't move it!!!!
ReplyDeleteCopper wire makes great trellis too and it oxidizes a beautiful green.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Love ferns too, except they do not like our heat. My poor hanging ferns on the front porch are already struggling. The ones by our pond that are more shaded do really well however. The clematis is so pretty!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, quit being a tease and show us that new craft cabinet. I know I will be green with envy and drooling, so I'll be sure to have the bib ready. LOL
Maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet, but having a hard time picturing the trellis (it really is invisible!) Would love to see a close up! Thanks - the porch looks great, of course!
ReplyDeleteI'll work on some close-ups for you!!!

Love the fern! So lush :) Can't wait to see your crafty goodness tomorrow. I love me some craft organization!!!
ReplyDeletei luv ferns too! we have a covered 3/4 wrap around porch and we have ferns hanging between the posts (11 of them!). I need to transplant them, they are starting to smother themselves out they are getting so big.
ReplyDeleteI love your house, I love your taste, I love your garden, I love your blog. I think I even might love you a little, even though I don't know you.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I have never heard of a rain chain before. What is it's function?
ReplyDeleteHi Gina,
DeleteA rain chain is something people use instead of a downspout. It's used to take water from the gutters and guide it down to the ground . . . like a downspout but prettier!!!
Hope that answers your question!!
lots of Love

I can remember my mom always having a fern in our family room growing up. It was in a pot with macromae. I can guarantee that you have the best looking porch in the neighborhood ...... matter of fact the city. I have always wanted a rain chain. If we ever build a house, I would want them. Your clematis is beautiful and looks happy climbing up your railing.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful---your ferns, clematis and rain chain. Ferns are my favorite for hanging baskets on the front porch. No deadheading and they last well into the fall and cool weather. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI totally giggled at the beginning, definitely a cute way to start the post! Do ferns do well up north? We're in the pacific northwest and I never even considered ferns because I wasn't sure they would live! I guess I'll need to look into that more. :)
ReplyDeleteCopper wire is also a good choice for your clematis to climb on. It was recommended to me by a landscaper years ago and I have been very happy with it. It also looks good on wooden fences it you want climbing plants. It ages beautifully and would coordinate with your new rain chain. Beautiful porch, by the way.
ReplyDeleteLove me some Sir Mix A Lot! Hehe!
ReplyDeleteYour ferns are awesome! I have fern envy! Cali is just too hot and dry!
Lovely as always, Ashli!
Hope your're having a great week!

I love Ferns also! I have 3 hanging on my porch not to mention all the other kinds of flowers I have. I don't have a Clematis yet, but it's on my list. I have loved them for a few years now after someone introduced me to them. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the fern but what color is your front door? Love it too!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol! I'm so sorry, I don't know the color it was a choice our builders made! I'll try to color match it to some paint chips I have. I'll let you know if I find a match!!!
