Tupperware has always been one of the most difficult things to organize. But I think I've figured out an easier way to do it . . . you have to start from Scratch!
I think the reason that tupperware cabinets and drawers are so messy is because we all have a hodge podge of different tupperware, that don't stack up together or nest nicely within each other. Right before we made the move to the new house (over a year ago) I decided that we should really have just one or two types of tupperware and stick to them. I started piecing together our new tupperware collection, slowly because it's not a super cheap thing to do. A year later I now have all the pieces we need!
I decided on Glasslock tupperware. A lot of Lee's lunches are leftovers that need to be reheated, and with all the concern over heating plastic I thought I'd play it safe and invest in some Glass tupperware.
Honestly, it's totally worth the extra money. The lids always fit perfectly, no matter how many times you wash them and you can store soup in them too! (and NO glasslock hasn't paid me for saying that . . . I really do love them, all on my own).
SO without further ado . . . Our Tupperware cabinet:
Here's what we've got going on:
1. Glasslock Tupperware containers.
2. Glasslock Tupperware Bowls, I swear these things might be the most useful tool I have in the kitchen. Once a week I make a large salad (Greek, Pasta, Tomato/basil) then I pop the lid on and keep it in the fridge so we always have something to snack on. They're also great for taking a dish to a potluck! We found ours at Costco, $19.99 bought you a set of 3.
3. Glass juice jugs, better then plastic, they won't get dyed from fruit juice, and you don't have to worry about leaching plastic (although BPA free plastic is considered safe). We found our glass juice jugs at Target.
4. Water bottles. BPA Free!! And his and hers TO GO coffee mugs.
5. Rubbermaid Produce Tupperware. I like to chop up vegetables and have them ready to eat, it makes it more likely that I'll snack on something healthy (more likely, not guaranteed ;). I find that the produce tupperware keeps it from going soggy, and I do think it keeps vegetables fresher longer.
We also use the back half of the cabinet for misc. party supplies, like:
A. Plastic knives and forks, and paper napkins
and
B. Some Mason Jars . . . You can never have enough Mason Jars!
So there's how I organized my tupperware cabinet. I know it's not the most cost effective way to do it, but it works. All in, I think I spent about $60 in Glass lock Tupperware and maybe another $15 on produce tupperware. Not to bad considering I spaced it out over a year. It doesn't matter what tupperware you use, as long as they all stack up and fit nicely together, it could be super expensive tupperware brand, or super cheap dollar store brands (as long as the plastic is BPA free).

I am confused - do you actually call all your food containers "tupperware", whether they are of the Tupperware brand or not?
ReplyDeleteI like how you organized the containers, I have two drawers of tupperware containers and the problem is most of them aren't stackable. :(
Jule
Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's a Canadian thing but I've always called any form of food storage tupperware??? Even if it's not actually tupperware brand.
DeleteWeird, I thought everyone did that, haha.
~Ashli
Hey Ashli,
DeleteI didn't know that, but we have things like that, too, here in Germany, where we call all kinds of things brandnames although they aren't the "original". Bye the way, I like the glass containers.
Jule
I do the same thing, Ashli! I have those same rubbermaid produce containers but call them tupperware. We all call facial tissue kleenex too, right?
DeleteI'm pretty sure it's a Canadian thing to call certain items by a branded name for all. Like Kleenex, Tupperware, etc. I do it all the time too (and I AM Canadian as well) Haha
DeleteLove how organized you are!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME! Great job....!
ReplyDeleteI love it! My tupperware cupboard is a nightmare!! I need to expand the top shelf so that I have more upper room... this is so inspiring! thanks!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had that much cabinet space to stack everything assembled! We have to stack all dished inside each other & all lids get stacked together. Oh how I'm dreaming of this much space.
ReplyDeleteTupperware is like Kleenex or BandAids. Not many people call it facial tissue or bandages, we go with the leading brandname.
I Hear you!! Our last tupperware cabinet was about 1/4 the size:

I wish my shelves in my cabinets weren't the half shelves on the top. Would be so much more easier to organize. I am with you... stacking is the way to go. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteWe've switched to the glass locking-lid tupperware too! (Yes, I call it all "tupperware" too. Simpler than "kitchen storage container"!) I forget what brand it is, but it goes on sale at Walmart all the time so we've been slowly adding to our collection and relegating the plastic stuff to the workshop and craft room for storage/organization.
ReplyDeleteIn our kitchen, we actually use two drawers to hold our tupperware (one deep for the big containers and one shallow for the small containers). We put the lids on everything and stack like on top of like. Sounds strange at first but it actually works really well for us and there is never any hunting for lids.
I've been looking to get trade up all of my beaten plastic containers for glass containers! Thanks for the tips - Costco and Target, here I come! :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously I love your blog and your passion for all domestic things. I cringe thinking about my tupperware cabinet and my husband literally growned last night when he tried to pack something up and muttered, "where's the stupid lid for this one?" Ha!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashli - I've been waiting for this post and it may be the push over the edge I need to invest in the glass.
ReplyDeleteWow. I wished our cabinet looked this good.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is a Canadian thing as myself and friends call it tupperware even when it is not the real thing.
ReplyDeleteLove that you have gone with the glass containers and the BPA free. What I do is wash/dishwasher the item them I do not place the lid on until it has air dried for at least a day....then on with the lid. Just another one of my things that I do not like to see moisture on the inside of the clean tupperware. Then the lid is where it should be.
Love your blog.
We call it all Tupperware too! I know the actual company has got to hate that!! LOL I have the same green lid type for produce, but am ready to switch our others to glass. Thanks for the heads up about Costco. I know Target doesn't carry the snap and lock, just the new Rubbermaid glass containers.
ReplyDeleteSigh....these are my FAVORITE kinds of posts Ashli. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
M.
Do you have any problems storing things with the lids on? I have the exact same set (love it!), but my mom always obsessed that you shouldn't store tupperware with the lid on or it would smell bad. I've always followed her advice to the letter, but now I'm thinking it might just be a myth...
ReplyDeleteI've heard that before too,
DeleteIf there is any moisture in there, and you leave it for a long time I could definitely see it being smelly. But I just make sure they are mostly dry before I snap the lid on, and I think that because we use ours so often, it never sits around getting smelly!
We've never had an issue and we've been storing ours this way for years now! :)

I just replaced all my tupperware containers a few weeks ago :-)(we had mix-matched sets with lids or bases missing, not able to stack/nest, reused butter or sour cream containers - lol!)
ReplyDeleteI bought a set of Rubbermaid Premier - bpa free, freezer/microwave/dishwasher safe. I thought about buying glass containers, but with 3 small kiddies in the house - I didn't want them emptying the shelf in the kitchen dropping the glass containers all over the floor.
Your cabinet looks fantastic! I'm slowly in the process of switching out plastic containers for glass. My favorite part is pre-assembling dinners... The glass containers go into the freezer, to the fridge to thaw, and into the oven at dinner.
ReplyDeleteI have the same containers! I love them!!! Your cabinet looks beautiful! Does it stay that way? My hubby knocks stuff over, and also does not always put things away as neatly as I would. I am fighting a losing battle to keep mine looking as pretty as yours...

As someone who actually sells Tupperware, I was really excited when I saw your post heading today. Imagine my disappointment when I read on further and there wasn't a single piece of actual Tupperware in the whole post. What you have isn't Tupperware--they're just storage containers. :(
ReplyDeleteI've heard people refer to their plastic containers as Tupperware before (and I always politely correct them, lol!), but never glass ones.
And for the record, TW has a whole line of BPA-free containers that are microwave safe. I'm sure you you didn't mean to imply that the glass ones were safer than TW of course, but some might infer that that's the case. It's just the inferior brands of plastic containers that you have to worry about, not ours! ;)
I also sell Tupperware and was dissappointed with the reference. I'm doing research on some of the "History of Tupperware" and I can tell you that Earl Tupper and Brownie Wise would not approve of practically the entire world calling STORAGE CONTAINERS by the Tupperware name.
DeleteYou may ask why a Tupperware consultant would even bother to post. It's not to be mean or anything like that. It's just to set the record straight that as of April 2012 Tupperware is 64 years old and if you want Tupperware then it's still here and still a wonderful product.
I love it because it is efficient, pretty and quickly you can see what you need. But mostly because I organize mine the same way too! Great minds think alike :)
ReplyDeletei'm so ashamed of my tupperware cabinet looking at yours. seriously i stack it all togather, open it up a sorta chunk it in and close the doors really quick! tomorrow night i'm gonna organize it, thanks for this post.
ReplyDeleteOk, calm down Tupperware salespeople. :-) It's just a word - like kleenex or bandaid. I'd think you'd be glad people recognize the Tupperware name to the point that they actually use it as a noun. Ashli, the "tupperware" cabinet looks great. You go girl!
ReplyDeleteThanks all you Tupperware Ladies. I am one too! I appreciate the proper usage of the name as well. :)
ReplyDeleteI kind of wonder what all the "Tupperware Ladies" call bandaids??? Unless you call them sticky wound covers??? hehe

ReplyDeleteI am LOVING THIS BLOG and comments As a tupperware consultant myself this was great discussion. To me because Tupperware is such a fine product people call everything Tupperware which is a compliment. I used to be a top seller for Lazboy and same thing everyone called all recliners Lazboy it is just because the products are so great they take the market as everyone wants them. Tupperware actually has products that fit together since I am a professional interior designer (did the school thing) one of the reasons I chose Tupperware as my biz is the organization, and as a serious couponer and homesteader the food storage tips, organization it just all works beautiful for me. It is well worth the money to do it right the first time so I tossed out all the inferior brands to me and invested in the good stuff that will last me a lifetime. just my opinion.. all said great article and great discussion. People have to do what is best for them but this works beautiful for me. Love the articles keep writing this blog is wonderful!
