    My Mother's Daughter!

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day!!!! Lee's a "Doggy Daddy" so he got a new Hawaiian Shirt (a la Jimmy Buffet) haha
We spent the weekend on Vancouver Island. Half to visit my Dad for Father's Day! and Half to see my mom's new/old Kitchen!
So Happy Father's Day Dad and Nice job MOM!

Because who doesn't Love a Great Before and After?
    Here's the Before:

    Here it is now:

I was shocked when I walked in the door and saw that my beige loving mother had painted the bottom of her cabinets . . . . Martha Stewart's "TIDEWATER"!
    I LOVE IT!!!
They didn't want to replace the counters, which were in perfect shape, but did put up a back splash and matched the grout to the counter top.
Another thing I LOVE is that Mom took the doors off of the upper cabinets and used it to display her lovely white dishes (she's definitely my Mother and if anyone had their doubts just check out all those white dishes). And how about that bead board wall paper! Mom really wanted to fit bead board into the cabinets, but using a jigsaw to cut large pieces of wood was outside of her skill set. So we found this bead board wallpaper, it was easy to install and looks GREAT!

The paper towel holder is the same one that we have, and the faucet is a close copy of the faucet from our townhouse . . . Just say'in! haha

The view from the door looking at the sink is lovely it looks out over their yard and makes doing dishes less of a chore.

This little blue kitchen has an eat in area, and for everyone who was wondering where the church pew from our old dining room went, you're about to get your answer.

The board and batten wall treatment was done using the same technique as our bedroom wall, but with a different pattern. I love how it comes about 2/3 rds up the wall!
I should also mention the flooring. It's peel and stick vinyl flooring. You cut it with scissors and lay it down. It costs about $1.65 a square foot, and you can lay it right over your old ugly linoleum flooring. It's super durable, and water/scratch resistant! I was amazed how great it looks, you'd never know!
And check out this garbage can, $2.50

So there it is. I think Mom and Dad did a great job on their new/old kitchen! Spending less than $1000!

      Thanks everyone!
Reenie- the trash can came from a local second hand store in my mum's town, it also came with a bunch of old fashioned tins for flour and sugar for the $2.50 price tag.
And the over the cabinet towel bar came from me, and I bought it from Home Outfitters but i've seen them at Target and the container store too :)

Just Ducky- I'll get some links together for you and post them here later today when we get home :)

Here's the INFO. on the vinyl flooring!
It's Trafficmaster Allure vinyl flooring, with special interlocking pieces :) hehe
Essentially each piece has a sticky tab facing up and a sticky tab facing down and they stick together, so no peeling up like the old vinyl peel and stick tiles :p
      Here's a couple links:

I so very much want that flooring. For a couple of our bathrooms (MIL suite and upstairs guest bathroom) that we don't use a ton. We have lino in them and hardwoods on the main floor. So checking into the options with this. I really want dark woods when we replace our hardwoods so this might be the perfect "trial run". At least color wise. Love that it isn't permanent.

HOW AKWARD to have laundry within inches away from the kitchen table...gross! We all know laundry can get stinky and messy and then to have it right next to the eating area...BAD home design layout!

I don't know how you do laundry but My laundry never gets "gross" Maybe this would be "gross" for you! But it is definitely NOT gross for someone like my mother. And for a senior who cannot go up and down stairs, in a small two bedroom house, this is extremely functional!!

I could understand "gross" and "stinky" and "messy" laundry if you have kids, but in a home with no children? Really? How bad does it get at your house? In mine, the laundry goes from our bodies to the hamper in the bedroom and from the hamper into the washing machine. It's not like anyone is rubbing dirty underwear all over the kitchen table. What a strange comment.

I love this! Super cute & shabby chic. I don't know how laundry would get stinky & messy? That doesn't make any sense. But where I live in Louisiana, we have plenty of smaller sized single homes where the builders try to make the best of square footage and MANY houses here have a 'laundry closet/room' in the dining room. Most people store their hampers in a bathroom closet or in their bedroom ,etc. My current laundry room is also just off the kitchen and if anything . . it makes it smell really well when I have the laundry going!

My laundry room is right off my kitchen. Not even feet away from my table. More like inches. It does have a door, but my laundry never get bad enough to be stinky, so IDK what that other person is doing with all their laundry, but some people can't afford to have a huge laundry room the size of a bedroom all off by itself in a basement or something. And most houses I've seen in my area have the laundry room right off the kitchen.

Cant wait to come up with a nice solution than the ugly builders grade doors we have. and btw im totally stealing your laundry room degisn ONE DAY. Been swooning over it for months :) just waiting for the right deal on a pretty cabinet to come along and then its beadboard & rod hanging time. Love the makeover. My laundry room is next to my kitchen and I have always fumed about having to carry dirty clothes from the bed/bath area all the way thru the house and thru the kitchen and then carry them back thru the kitchen and house to bed/bath area. I said that it had to be a man who designed my house cause he probably reasoned that the lady of the house would be in the kitchen cooking all day so she would like to have the laundry room close. Bite me. Jeez.

I think the rooms look adorable. I didn't even notice the washer until the unkind person pointed it out. I love the color she chose for those lower cabinets. My mother is recovering from a knee injury and cannot do her laundry in the basement. I bet she would take that laundry area in a skinny minute. Besides most people's kitchens have more bacteria than even their bathrooms, so just get over it. It looks beautiful and clean to me.

I really like the make over. Very fresh and clean looking. As for the laundry, the person who made the "gross" comment should be glad they don't live in the U.K. where many kitchens/homes are super small and almost ALWAYS have the laundry in the kitchen! I could understand a laundry room getting MESSY if its used by a large family like mine but for two people, especially an older couple? Please!!!!! I do agree that your Mom got some influence from your design flair though. Extremely well done!

I am British and do live in the UK and yes my washing machine is in my kitchen, next to my dishwasher, opposite my fridge and freezer. My tumble drier is in the garage as in the UK that is rarely used as we love to hang our clothes on the washing line as much as we can.
In the UK we do not commonly have utility rooms /laundry rooms just for the luxury of washing duty. Space is a premium in the UK and yes our houses are the smallest square footage in the western world so hence why washing appliances are generally found in the kitchen. Only in the houses worth 350k english pounds are utility rooms generally found - for a lot of people that is not in their price zone.( No idea what the conversion into Canadian dollars is for that one atm!)

And yes I have one husband, and two children, one even daring to be a football playing boy who trudges in the mud to the house, and yes I even sort my clean laundry on my kitchen table as it is the only space I can do such a thing. But hey, I have a clean house and purchase something called discinfectant which allows any germs to be cleaned away! We do not get sick through putting our washing through the house into our kitchen - infact my children got 100% attendance last school year.
SO in my humble opinion, appliances in kitchens rock and people should remember that typing something in the virtual world is the same as saying it in the real one - it can hurt.
I loved the makeover by the way!

I think this is a beautiful and affordable makeover.
I also did not even notice the laundry area until I read the comments.
I grew up in California and my grandparents home had the washer and dryer in the kitchen.
My grandpa cut a removable counter top, so that my Nana had added counter space for her family of 6.

When I moved into my first home it had the exact same lay out as my Grandparents home, including the laundry in the kitchen.
I didn't like the way it looked, as the laundry area was a focal point in the kitchen, but I was happy that I no longer had to go to the laundry mat! ** You take the good, you take the bad and there you have the facts of life : ) **

I think your parents did a beautiful job! With the right piece of counter top, some strategically placed decor (to camouflage the knobs) and a skirt to cover the front of the units your Mom ould use the top of the washer and dryer as a buffet or bar for entertaining.

Make lemonade and forget the people that are full of sour grapes!
