This topic is much more a controversial topic then we usually cover here at the Manor, but it is something we both feel so strongly about!
5 years ago we adopted Max from a rescue agency, who saved him from a Puppy Mill. He was scared of people, he had been abused and as a result has broken ribs and lost most of his teeth. He's safe and loved now, but still many years later he is dealing with the effects of 3 years in a Mill! In fact, at Max's vet appointment last week we were told that because of Max's advanced dental disease it will become harder and harder for him to eat his food without help. It was so hard to hear, he's a great dog! and didn't deserve to suffer before and he doesn't deserve to suffer now. We have to feed him his food by hand twice a day because he can no longer get it out of his dish, but other then that, and an inch of tongue hanging out of his mouth :) he has no other signs and is the same spunky puppy he's always been.
Please if you are thinking of adding a furry family member, take the time to educate yourself on where your fuzzy buddy is coming from. Puppy Mills BITE!
Puppies aren't products, we shouldn't be buying them in stores.
So don't shop, adopt!!!!
The Flea's Knees Tees make t-shirts with proceeds going toward rescuing dogs out of mills. Lee and myself have ordered ours, we can't wait to wear them and raise puppy mill awareness.
What a co-incidence. There is a big push here in Australia to have puppy farms outlawed. This weekend saw a peaceful rally in one of our major cities, to bring awareness to this outrageous practise going on right under our noses too. Our RSPCA does it's best to bring animal cruelty cases to court. There truly is some heartless, greedy individuals in society. Thanks for highlighting this issue in your post Ashli. Max is a lucky boy to have you caring for his needs. xx
I love the idea of a peaceful rally! The more people know the better choices they can make. Thanks so much for your comment and for the info on Australia! I'm so glad the RSPCA is bringing those cases to court. The BCSPCA is also working very hard to prosecute puppy mill owners! Thanks again! Max says Thanks TOO! :)
I'm right there with you, Ashli! I don't have a dog (yet), but I have 4 cats all of whom are rescue kitties. One was abandoned, two were feral rescues and one was taken from a home with 80+ cats (hoarder situation). I so want a little dog and, of course, will adopt a rescue puppy/dog. If I can find one as cute as Max, I'll be a happy girl!
He is so cute! Bless you for rescuing him. Bless his little heart. Truly heartbreaking! We've adopted our kids & we adopt our animals, too! PTL you both found each other. :)
Thank you Ladies! Max says thanks too :) We normally aren't so political but we feel so strongly about the fight to make puppy mills illegal!! Honestly we are the lucky ones, Max is one amazing dog! Thanks again! I'm so glad others already know about the abuse in puppy mills and are spreading the word!!
Aw poor little guy! But im so glad to hear you saved him and gave him a loving and happy home. He is a cutie!
I hate the thought of puppy mills. They make me sad and angry. Those poor dogs don't deserve that kind of life. Our 2 cats we used to have [we gave them to a relative who had no kids because after our son was born they started to show aggression... ], we rescued them from a man who was going to throw them in the river when they were just little tiny kittens :( and our current dog, Lola was adopted from a person who could no longer afford to take care of her. We are also currently looking into a Boston terrier Rescue network to adopt her a playmate. :)
My cousin has the same dog also named Max. He too was abused..thrown against the wall, his tongue also hangs to one side. He is so loved now and well taken care of. It is truly disgusting how some people treat innocent helpless animals.
My husband and I adopted a lab/border collie mix a few years ago. We absolutely love him!
Kasey and Karen, I'm so glad to hear you guys have adopted your pets too!!! Kasey, I don't know of any Boston Terrier rescue groups but I do love the breed, one of Max's best buddies is a Boston named Markus!! Karen Poor little puppy! I am also amazed at what people will do! It's so heartbreaking :( My sister has a pure bread border collie (bought from a licenced Breeder) and she's a sweet heart! Needs a lot of exercise!!!! I'm sure you know what I'm talking about :)
Great job educating! My cat of 14 years, Meow Meow, had to be put down on Sunday. He had cancer of the jaw and toward the end could only sip up water and chicken broth. I loved that little guy! Good for you for embracing your little saved puppy and not giving up on him.
Well said. I volunteer at our local animal shelter and there are tons of friendly, loving cats & dogs that so want homes. Puppies should never be "mass produced". Adoption is the way to go! Max is a lucky dog : )
