    New House Plans: Living Room

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of excitement, and with 32 days until we move it doesn't look like it will be calming down anytime soon. We've got subscriptions to move and mail to forward. Cable to cancel and bills . . . . . yeah I guess we have to tell the bills we are moving too!
This weeks goal, get boxes! Lots of BOXES!

    Moving Tip:
I know a lot of people say to ask stores, liquor stores, grocery stores etc . . . we've moved once with real moving boxes, and found it to be a lot easier, the boxes hold up well, they are larger and hold a lot more. But I am definitely not paying $5 a small box to $13 for a large one. So what we are doing is CRAIGSLIST!!! Craigslist or Kijiji have people who have just moved and are needing to get rid of their moving boxes. Some have the fancy moving boxes and some just have boxes they have collected from liquor stores and grocery stores. Some want money for them, some people are giving them away, but either way you go, you are saving a ton of money.
We found two people, one person has moving boxes from a moving company. They have 20 boxes, ranging in size from small to extra large, they are selling the lot of them for $20. That's the same price as one Large and one medium box if we were to buy them new. The second person we are getting boxes from has around 20 random boxes, most of them are small liquor store boxes, mostly wine boxes (I can just imagine what our new neighbors will think when we move in with 20 wine boxes), but those boxes are free we just have to go pick them up.
And just to be sure we have enough boxes we have some fabulous friends who have some boxes in their basement they were so kind to donate to the cause (the cause being our move :)

Now on to our Living Room:
I am so excited to share with you are new living room.

It has so many features that I fell in love with, the windows being the major feature! Huge windows, about 15 feet worth of them. I also Love the fireplace, although I have no idea why they made the cut out above the mantel so tall? But the plan thus far, could change still, is to drywall up the hole. I really don't want the T.V on top of the fireplace and that hole is way too tall! The T.V. will go off to the side on a fabulous console (I still need to find) and a set of pictures above the mantel.
Here's some Ideas I'm loving now:

    Photo Via Country Living
I love the pictures above the mantel, Love the bookcases on either side of the fireplace (although we need our t.v. there so we probably won't have bookcases. Love the curtain rod.

    Photo via Pottery Barn
I love this! I have no idea where it's going to go but I love it and had to include it into my living room inspiration! LOVE IT!
    Photo via Pottery Barn
I love this photo also, I don't think we are going to go with red but I love this idea in any color, ooooo . . . navy blue would be nice.

and last for today: Young House Love's living room
    Photo via Young House Love
Love the lightness of the room, the pop of color with the rug. But the reason I included this in my living room inspiration was the windows, I love the sea grass roman shades with the white curtain panels! This is how we want our windows to look!
Be back tomorrow with more living room angles and ideas!
Let us know what you think!

If you live anywhere close to a military base ask around there for boxes. People move all the time & will have tons of boxes in mostly the larger sizes with packing paper included. Good luck with your move. The new manor looks wonderful can't wait to see more of it.

I like the first inspiration picture a lot! I don't think I'd keep the tall "nook" either. It could be neat at Christmastime, but what about the rest of the year? ;)

I love that same country living photo. The muted colors. The comfy skirted couch. Can't wait.

I for one prefer to watch my tv vertically... why in the world would you watch it any other way?! ;)
Seriously though, the only thing I can think of is maybe it's shaped that way so you can put your DVD, PVR etc. right below the tv there.
We had some flooding here in Winnipeg a few months back from having way too much rain. My best friend had to pack up her whole basement which sadly had just been finished last November and has now had to be gutted. I saved all my big boxes from Costco and Matt's tool purchases and sent them her way, so definitely ask your friends.
That's going to be one awesome cosy little room when you are done!

Too funny about the wine boxes...your new neighbors will expect you to through fabulous parties!! LOL

I love all of your inspiration photos. I am a HUGE fan of Pottery Barn. Own many pieces and have found them to be very family friendly and easy to decorate around.

It is too bad they put the sconces on either side of the fireplace niche...otherwise you could have had a picture lamp installed at the top to illuminate artwork placed there. I can see painting it to add a pop of color if you choose to keep it, if only temporarily. I do understand your wanting to drywall over it however.

Can't wait to see the rest!!

Maybe you're suppose to have a HUGE TV which would completely cover the entire niche so that NONE of the wiring bits are in any way visible. Talk about a focal point in the living room!! I'd walk in and be convinced it was a theatre with added warmth! LOL
Better idea is the bookshelves on either side of the fireplace and turning one of those 5!!! bedrooms into a cozy TV den.

We just moved and we bought used boxes from our moving company. They were 3 bucks a box.

      Good luck with the packing!

The living room looks so cosy even without furniture.
Maybe live with the cut out for a little while and then decide what features will work best.
My favourite pic is the first by Country Living.

love the first pic...so calming and serene. I'm curious what exactly you like and would use from the third pic (the red PB pic).

Maybe you could get that awesome bench from the second photo, place it under the staircase, and place the TV on that. That would allow for the bookcases, and besides, the TV next to the fireplace could compete for attention. Or, do what YHL did in their den with their fireplace...

Thanks so much for the moving box tips :) I'm sure we'll need a bunch and my sister is also moving this month so I'll let her in on the tips too.
The first country living photo is my fav too, but the pottery barn photo just looks so cozy to me. I think what I like about it is the pop of red, I love a great pop of color in a coffee table or side table. I also love the rough jute rug!
I definitely thought about putting the under the stair case, but Lee says that the light coming in from the wall of windows would make it hard to see the t.v. and with hockey season starting soon . . .
that's out of the question haha
I do love what YHL did in their den, we'll definitely be stealing some ideas from them!!

As for the tall nook, check out this post by three men and a lady... there is a great example of stunning family photos filling an awkward space like that:

      Thanks Jenn
I love what she did with her weird little nook, if we can't drywall it up right away, I'll definitely do something like that!!!
Thanks so much for the link! It was super helpful!
