As you probably already know we have a small kitchen. It's no secret, you've seen the pictures it's small.
We needed somewhere to store our pots and pans, with no available real estate left in the kitchen we decided on a pot rack.
There are many reason's we didn't go with a traditional pot rack:
The cost, traditional pot racks can be very pricey.
The depth, with Lee being so tall we had to consider how far off the wall the pots would hang, as it would sit above our sink.
The Length, our kitchen window is fairly large and a little pot rack would look tiny against the window.
And, we simply wanted something more streamlined.
We chose the Ikea BJÄRNUM Hat/shoe rack, and with the addition of some S hooks (also purchased from Ikea) it was perfect!
It's narrow so it dangles the pots in front of us and not over our heads, or in Lee's case into his head.
It's sleek and modern, and the cost was just right!
Normally I wouldn't choose to block natural light, but a girls gotta eat, and call me crazy but I prefer my food cooked, so pots and pans were a complete necessity.
Quick note: We purchased the Old Ikea Bjarnum Hat rack, it was slightly longer then the new one is, if we had bought the new one we would have purchased two so that it was the same width as the window.

I never tire of looking at your home photos...and always leave here inspired!
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
M.
I really like it! And I could do sth like that in my kitchen window. I have 2 questions though:
ReplyDelete1. Do the pans get dusted a lot? Considering that half of my window is almost always open...that could be a bammer
2. Is it difficult to reach the leads or pans?
TIA
Thanks! We love it!
ReplyDeleteI cook a lot so we've never seen dust on the pots and pans. Each pot and pan gets used at least once a week. Our window stays open during the summer but we have a screen.
The lids are a little difficult for me to reach but we have a little stool (you can see our stool post at:
http://www.maillardvillemanor.com/2010/07/kitchen-stool-project.html
It helps me reach them. But the pans are all easily within reach! I am fairly tall though (5'9")
Hope that helps!
The best way to maximize small spaces is to go vertical!
I love the stainless mixed with the touch of red in the pans. You are a most clever girl...I think I've told you that before, but it's true!
ReplyDeleteThat looks perfect in that spot in your kitchen and functional! Love the touches of red, too!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and really like it however i couldn't find your follower button?
ReplyDeleteI wanted to add you to my blog list.
Pamela from French Buttons
That is really nice, it fits in beautifully with your sink (btw love the faucet).
ReplyDeleteSOmetimes I wish my pots weren't those golden-brown glass things (you remember them? I pick them up at yardsales) so that I could hang them in some kind of cool way.
Thanks so much everyone! I am so glad you all like it! I was worried maybe it blocked the window too much, not that we have a choice, there is no where else to store them!!

You could have hung it higher, the lids don't need that much room.Every inch of light makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteBTW Your kitchen is gorgeous in an old fashioned kind of way.:)
ReplyDeleteThanks anonymous! We couldn't hang the rack any higher because the stool we use in the kitchen only raises me up another 12" and I couldn't reach the lids if they were even one inch higher. But trust, I hung that rack as high as I possibly could, every inch of natural light was welcomed in!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment no ones ever told me it was beautiful in an old fashioned kind of way, that's so sweet!
